Our Story

Built for people who refuse
to settle for a chain.

Crema exists because finding a great independent coffee shop when you're traveling shouldn't require a local friend, three Reddit threads, and a prayer.

The Problem

“Coffee shops near me” was broken.

Every time I traveled for work, the ritual was the same. Open Google Maps, search for coffee, scroll past four Starbucks, two Dunkin's, and a Panera — and eventually give up and go to whichever chain was closest to the hotel. Not because I wanted to. Because finding something better felt like a research project.

The thing is: great coffee is everywhere. Every city has at least a handful of independent shops that would make you forget you were even traveling for work. A corner place where the barista knows the regulars by name. A roaster tucked into a warehouse district. A neighborhood café that doubles as the unofficial living room for whoever lives nearby.

These places exist. They're just invisible. The big platforms don't surface them. The algorithm rewards volume and ad spend, not quality and soul. So the chains win by default, and the good spots stay hidden from everyone except the people lucky enough to already live there.

The Belief

A great cup of coffee can make a city.

Whether you're grinding through a work trip, exploring somewhere new for fun, or just tired of defaulting to the same place in your own city: a great coffee shop changes the whole texture of a morning. A flat white pulled right. A cortado that actually tastes like something. A pour-over made with enough intention that you slow down to notice.

When you're traveling, the coffee shop is often where you find the city. Not the tourist attraction, not the hotel lobby — the place where locals actually go. The one without a line because it hasn't been written up everywhere yet. The one you'll tell people about when you get back.

And when you're at home, it's the place you didn't know existed three neighborhoods over. Crema is for all of it. Not just well-reviewed. Actually worth your morning.

What We Built

Crema. No chains. No fluff.

We built Crema to be the tool we always wanted. Tens of thousands of independent coffee shops across hundreds of US cities — curated, not just crawled. Chains are filtered out by design. Every shop gets a Crema's Take: a real, opinionated read on what makes the place worth visiting. Not a star rating. An actual reason to go.

The app lets you search by vibe, by drink style, by what you actually need — a place to work, a slow morning sit, somewhere dog-friendly, a spot open before 7am. You can plan a coffee itinerary for a city before you arrive, track the places you've been, and save the ones you want to get back to.

It's for the person who, when they land in a new city, their first question is: where's the good coffee? We built this for you.

What We Stand For

Independent only.

Chains are filtered out. Not ranked lower — removed. If it has a drive-through in a strip mall in 40 states, it's not on Crema.

Honest takes.

Every Crema's Take is an actual opinion. We're not here to tell you every shop is wonderful. We're here to tell you whether it's worth your morning.

Built for travelers.

Not just locals. Crema is optimized for the person who has one morning in a city and wants to use it well.
