Hamptons Coffee: Before the Brunch Crowds Arrive
Southampton to Montauk — the independent café circuit at the end of Long Island
4 min read · June 2026 · By Gabe Petersen
The Quick Shot
Southampton is the commercial anchor — Tate's Bake Shop and Sant Ambroeus are the names everyone knows. Sag Harbor is the real town with real locals, Hampton Coffee Company is the circuit regular, and Montauk at the tip runs looser with a surf-crowd café scene that outlasts the season. Crema tracks 92 independent shops in The Hamptons, chains excluded.
The Hamptons has a reputation problem that has nothing to do with the coffee. The hedge funds, the velvet ropes, the parking on a Saturday in August. All of it is real and none of it has anything to do with a good morning cup. The café scene out here is better than you'd expect because the year-round population is particular about what it drinks. Southampton has the brand names. Sag Harbor is the actual town where people live, and the coffee reflects it. Montauk is the end of the road in every sense, and the cafés there have a kind of resigned goodness about them — they know you came for the beach, but they're going to make your morning count anyway.
Local Grounds
Southampton — Main Street
The commercial center of the Hamptons. Crowded in summer, surprisingly pleasant in October. Sant Ambroeus is the power-breakfast room. Tate's Bake Shop is the institution.
Sag Harbor — Main Street
The town that feels like a town. Harbor, sailboats, year-round population. Less performative than East Hampton, better coffee per capita.
Bridgehampton
Between the two big towns. Hampton Coffee Company's headquarters is here. Encanto Crepes is the local favorite that doesn't advertise.
Montauk — East Lake Drive
The end of the line. Surf culture, seasonal energy, and a small café scene that draws the right people. Get here before July 4th or after Labor Day for the full effect.

Barista’s Notes
- 01The Hamptons in July and August is a different experience than the rest of the year. The cafés are better in September. The beaches are better in September. Everything is better in September.
- 02Sag Harbor is 10 minutes from East Hampton and gets overlooked. It's the best town out here for an actual morning.
- 03Parking in Southampton on a summer weekend is a planning exercise, not an afterthought.
- 04Montauk is 45 minutes east of Southampton. Make it a day trip, not an afterthought.
