Napa Valley Coffee Guide
From downtown Napa to St. Helena, Yountville & Calistoga — the valley's best independent cups between the wineries

The Quick Shot
Downtown Napa anchors the valley — Napa Valley Coffee Roasting Co. has been here since 1994, Winston's is where locals go now. St. Helena's Model Bakery is the must-stop mid-valley. Yountville's Bouchon Bakery is what you hit before or after French Laundry. Calistoga closes out the valley at the volcanic north end with Café Sarafornia. Crema tracks 72 independent shops in Napa Valley, chains excluded.
Napa Valley has a coffee problem in the same way that it has a food problem: the wine crowds the conversation and the quality of everything else goes under-reported. But the coffee is there, and it's good. Downtown Napa has a roaster that's been operating since 1994 and a newer locals' favorite that has quietly surpassed it. Mid-valley, the Model Bakery in St. Helena has been feeding the wine country crowd since before farm-to-table was a phrase. Yountville exists in its own category: one mile long, every restaurant a destination, Bouchon Bakery as the morning anchor. And Calistoga, at the volcanic north end of the valley, runs at a slower pace and a lower temperature than the rest of it.
Local Grounds
Downtown Napa
The city end of the valley. Walkable, more casual than the wine corridor. Napa Valley Coffee Roasting Co. has been the anchor here for decades.
Yountville
One mile long. Every restaurant is a destination. Bouchon Bakery is the morning institution.
St. Helena
Mid-valley wine country at its most classic. The Model Bakery is the reason to stop.
Calistoga
The volcanic north end. Hot springs, spa culture, and Café Sarafornia holding it down.
Worth the Grind
Barista’s Notes
- 01The valley runs north-south on one main road (Hwy 29) with a parallel alternative (Silverado Trail). Do the trail on the way up, 29 on the way back.
- 02Yountville is one mile long but book restaurants weeks in advance. The coffee you can walk into.
- 03Calistoga is 30 minutes north of Napa city but worth the full drive. The mud baths are a real thing.
- 04Wine tasting starts at 10am at most estates. Get the coffee stop in first.
- 05Napa is not San Francisco weather. It gets genuinely hot mid-valley in summer. Morning is the best time for everything.
High-rated, low-profile spots that don’t show up when tourists Google “best coffee near me.” You’re welcome.
