The Quick Shot

Oakland's best specialty coffee runs through Grand Lake, Temescal, and Fruitvale. Top shops include Arizmendi Bakery on Lakeshore, The Wolf on Piedmont Ave, Bicycle Coffee in Jack London Square, and Farley's East on Grand Ave, with hidden gems like Desta Ethiopian Cafe in Temescal, Petit Cafe on 30th Street, and Mohka House on MacArthur. Crema tracks 135 independent shops in Oakland, chains excluded.

Oakland has been absorbing people priced out of San Francisco for a decade and the coffee scene absorbed their expectations. The result is a city with a more earnest, less performative specialty coffee culture than its neighbor across the bay. Arizmendi Bakery on Lakeshore has worker-owned credibility and croissants that have no obligation to be as good as they are. Temescal has the density: multiple serious shops within walking distance of each other. Fruitvale has Hasta Muerte, which opened as a Latinx-focused community coffee space and built a following on quality and mission simultaneously. The Grand Lake neighborhood has the farmers market on Saturdays and The Wolf on Piedmont Ave. San Francisco has more famous shops. Oakland has better ones per dollar, and the rooms are less crowded with people who flew in specifically for the Instagram.

Local Grounds

Temescal

The most concentrated specialty coffee neighborhood in Oakland. Telegraph Ave and the cross streets have multiple serious options within easy walking distance.

Grand Lake

The lake, the farmers market on Saturday, and coffee shops that have built their regulars from the neighborhood. The Wolf on Piedmont Ave is the anchor.

Fruitvale

The BART stop drops you into the Fruitvale Village. Hasta Muerte runs the Fruitvale Ave corner with a community focus and serious espresso.

Jack London Square / Downtown

Bicycle Coffee anchors the waterfront end. More business crowd on weekdays, better for a quick stop before catching the ferry to SF.

Barista’s Notes

  • 01BART connects Oakland neighborhoods to each other and to San Francisco without a car. Fruitvale, Lake Merritt, and 19th Street stops each have good coffee nearby.
  • 02The Grand Lake farmers market runs Saturdays. Arizmendi and The Wolf are both within a short walk of the market. Plan the whole morning.
  • 03Oakland and Berkeley blur together along Telegraph Ave. The Temescal district sits at the border. Use Crema's map to navigate.
  • 04The ferry to San Francisco from Jack London Square is 30 minutes and worth doing. Bicycle Coffee is a few blocks from the terminal.
  • 05Oakland summers are cooler than you might expect because of the bay fog. The morning window is longer than in Sacramento or the Central Valley.

Oakland has more going on than the SF comparison suggests. Use Crema to find every independent coffee shop across the city.
