The city rebuilt around its neighborhoods. The coffee followed.

The Quick Shot
Richmond's specialty coffee anchors in Church Hill, Scott's Addition, and The Fan. Sub Rosa Bakery is the essential morning stop, Lamplighter and Ironclad define the specialty scene, and Afterglow Coffee Cooperative and Reviresco Coffee Company are what the locals drink when they want something with less foot traffic. Crema tracks 105 independent shops in Richmond, chains excluded.
Richmond's revival story has been told a lot, but the coffee version is worth knowing. Sub Rosa Bakery on Church Hill opened in a converted building on N 25th Street and became the kind of morning anchor that changes a neighborhood's identity. Lamplighter built the specialty scene before Scott's Addition became the neighborhood everyone was talking about. Ironclad Coffee opened on East Grace Street and stayed intensely focused on sourcing. Village Cafe has been in The Fan since before any of this was a trend. The city doesn't need to perform its coffee scene. It just has one. Walk Church Hill in the morning. Get to The Fan in the afternoon. Scott's Addition fills the gap between. You won't run out of good options.
Local Grounds
Church Hill
One of Richmond's oldest neighborhoods, with Sub Rosa as its anchor. The hill looks out over the city. Go in the morning before the lines form.
Scott's Addition
The converted warehouse district that's now Richmond's most talked-about neighborhood. Lamplighter's presence helped establish the area's identity before the breweries and restaurants arrived.
The Fan
The radiating-street neighborhood west of downtown. Village Cafe on W Grace Street has been the neighborhood's living room for decades. Consistent, comfortable, and full of regulars.
Shockoe Bottom / Downtown
The riverfront area with a mix of old warehouses and new development. Ironclad on E Grace Street is the specialty anchor for this part of the city.

Barista’s Notes
- 01Sub Rosa sells out of certain breads and pastries early. If there's something specific you want, go before 10am.
- 02Church Hill is about 2 miles east of downtown. Walkable if you're near the river, otherwise a short rideshare.
- 03Scott's Addition is worth an afternoon: coffee, breweries, and restaurants within a few walkable blocks.
- 04The Fan has good street parking on weekday mornings. On weekends it fills quickly.
- 05Richmond summers are hot and humid. Most shops have strong cold brew programs from May onward.
