Yume Mori Matcha
2319 Shattuck Ave, Berkeley, CA
Crema's Take
“This Berkeley gem specializes in traditional Japanese ceremonial-grade matcha drinks that range from classic whisks to creative flavor combinations like shizu matcha and double matcha blends, with an owner Pete who clearly knows his craft. The tiny, Instagram-worthy space draws a steady crowd seeking that perfect balance between quick grab-and-go convenience and a cozy spot to linger, though consistency can be hit-or-miss depending on how well your drink is prepared. If you're in the neighborhood and craving authentic matcha with genuine care behind it, it's absolutely worth joining the line.”

Small, cute, and aesthetically pleasing cafe. The workers were very kind and helpful! A great place to stop by if you’re walking around Berkeley or in-between classes. Definitely recommend to try the ichigo hojicha, it’s delicately sweet, toasty/nutty and blended well. The crepe was also very good, reminded me of the local shop crepes in Japan! Definitely worth the try. 💕💕
There was always a line when I passed by, so I decided to give it a try! I ordered the Cold Whisk Matcha with shizu matchia, oat milk and regular sweet. The drink had a rich umami flavor with an earthy taste and a light bitterness. It tasted great but the regular sweet was too sweet for me. Next time, I might choose no sugar or they offer more sweetness options. I would also like to try their Koku matcha drink next time!
I really wanted to like this place but I was actually a bit disappointed. The matcha LOOKS super good, but it was pretty watery imo. It tasted like my matcha at home after I finished half of my cup, and left it sitting for 5 mins. If that makes sense?? We got the double matcha which didn't taste like much ); A melted iced down matcha? Sad that I didn't like it. Pretty long line, and you just order on a kiosk. They have outdoor seating which is a plus.
I tried this place 3 times. I like the double matcha (mie) since it is strong, creamy, & flavourful. The strawberry matcha was off my list since it tasted ok. They always ran out of crepes around 2-3pm. So I couldn’t get it for the first 2 times. We got our crepes the last time since we came early but be prepared: your pocket could burn out here. *The cost of a crepe is around $10.95 plus tax. We paid almost $26 for 2 crepes plus tips. The crepes were pre make so it was cold. I couldn’t finish one crepe since it was too creamy & I got indigestion later. Recommend buy 1 crepe to share for 2 people. *The drinks here also are expensive & very small. Overall, it’s a place to taste matcha sometimes, not often since it’s expensive here. *** The downside is that they only have 1 kiosk to order & it took 1 customer (especially new one) around 7min to order while all baristas were watching, staring, rolling eyes & laughing at them. I didn’t like that kind of services.
I have to say that Pete, the owner of this Matcha Cafe really knows his matcha! Yume Mori brings the traditional taste of Japanese ceremonial grade Matcha to Berkeley! Yume Mori’s cafe from their understated decor to their beautifully crafted and tasty drinks and crepes is reminiscent of a Matcha shop you would see walking on the shotengai in Kamakura. This cafe is worth standing in line for! Thanks for bringing me such a nostalgic experience!
