Crema's Take
“Tucked just off Highway 395, this warmly run espresso bar delivers genuinely excellent coffee crafted with precision—think perfectly steamed milk and thoughtfully curated milk and syrup options that elevate each drink. The real magic is in the atmosphere: a charming outdoor yard with a barrel fire in winter, genuinely friendly owner, and that rare quality of making you feel like a cherished regular even on your first visit. Whether you're passing through or stopping by as a local ritual, the combination of gourmet artisan drinks and authentic hospitality makes this a gem worth the detour.”

Lovely coffee: quality espresso (+ machine), perfectly steamed milk, and good choice variety of milk and syrups. Stopped on our way down from mammoth and it was worth it - right off the main road and super nice man running it.
We have family nearby in independence, so this coffeshop is nice to have nearby along our walk to the corner store. The outdoor yard (with a warm fire in the barrell in winter!) next to the service camper is utterly charming. The owner is affable and friendly. The only reason I'm only giving three stars is because my order was not correct, and I think overcharged - I asked for a double espresso and got an Allongé (or in Australia, Long Black) or Americano (I wasn't watching closely so not sure which - A double espresso is 2 shots of straight espresso, pulled no longer than gives a rich crema at the end - about 4 fl oz; an Allongé/Long Black is pulled through the dose up to about 8 oz; an Americano is a shot or double shot, topped up with hot water. I'm noting these things as an espresso-bar drinker of close to 30 years). I was expecting to pay $2 and change, leaving me room for a tip with the $4 cash in my pocket, but instead was charged all $4, and left feeling bad that I could not put a proper tip in the jar for the otherwise excellent, quick, and friendly service. All that said, my coffee was delicious! The roast was correct (dark), and the aroma a lovely balance of bitter, caramel, and nutty-toasty. I will definitely be going back!
My wife and I stop by Cowboy Coffee every time we pass through Independence. You don’t want to miss this charming spot. The coffee is delicious. The owner is so friendly. And the ambiance is a dream if you have time to sit and stay for a little while.
Cowboy Coffee is a delightful gem! The friendly, attentive service makes you feel right at home, and the expert barista crafts gourmet artisan coffee that tastes as incredible as it looks. The charming trailer adds a cozy, rustic touch, perfectly complemented by plenty of outdoor seating where you can relax and take in the serene views of the Sierra Nevada mountains. A must-visit spot for coffee lovers!
This is such a great local coffee spot! The coffee was delicious and the gentleman running the spot was very friendly! It’s just off the main 395 and very easy to get to. Worth the stop. Thank you as well for the suggestion of Onion Valley Drive. It was fun! If you’re in the area, I hope you choose to support a local coffee vendor. Enjoy!
