Crema's Take
“This beloved Chinatown spot serves up authentic Hong Kong comfort food with genuine warmth and remarkably fair prices, where you can grab crispy curry fish balls and silky tofu dishes alongside traditional breakfast fare. Whether you're a local hunting for the best value Mongolian beef over rice or a visitor craving honest, flavorful classics like French toast and clay pot specialties, G&Y delivers the kind of no-fuss, family-friendly experience that keeps people coming back. It's the rare neighborhood restaurant that manages to be both a quick afternoon snack destination and a full dinner spot that won't break the bank.”

Came here for a quick afternoon snack! Got the French toast, curry fish balls and a ham & egg sandwich. All are classics of a afternoon snack/meal in Hong Kong.
I was a visitor from Canada and I had a dinner with my mom on the first day in San Francisco, we ordered 2 plates that are US$11.5 each. When I wanted to pay, the server asked me "pay with cash or card", I said "cash", then she brought the bill with the price US$27.02 after tax and told me "it doesn't include tips", I paid US$30 in total before I left. Honestly, I didn't know how much the sales tax rate would be in San Francisco but I didn't realize the bill was incorrect until I went back to the hotel, which should be 2*11.5*1.0863=25. I'm not sure why she did so, maybe she thought we are from mainland China and don't know the tipping culture as we speak Mandarine? Definitely I know the tipping culture in North America, and I always tip the server when I dine in but I think this behaviour couldn't be acceptable as the server lied to the customers. Probably the owner and the server wouldn't care about this review, please double check the pricing before you pay no matter with cash or card as a customer.
Good service. I'm on a hunt for a good value Mongolian beef over rice in Chinatown, and I think G & Y is one of my top right now in terms of taste, price and portions. I know this is not their speciality dish but it's quite tasty compared to others along this street.
This is a fantastic small Chinese restaurant with great food and prices, among the very best in San Francisco. I've eaten here a half a dozen times and brought friends who grew up in China. It's not a bakery or even a cafe: it's a small restaurant. Everything I've tried has been spectacular: juk, crispy noodles, ox tail, and pork chops. While the food is Hong Kong style, the food here is much better than the average at small restaurants in HK. Avoid the noon rush and lines. If you come slightly off peak, there should be no wait for a table.
Food is quite authentic and flavorful! I enjoyed all the dishes. The clay pot tasted really fresh, the tofu with fish is juicy and tender, the beef noodles and Hong Kong noodles are well seasoned and rich in flavor. I would love to come back and try other stuff here.
