Crema's Take

Onggi is a transportive Japanese-inspired cafe in Portland where the matcha is genuinely excellent and the creative drinks like matcha black sesame mochi and hojicha lattes with black sesame foam showcase real care in execution. Beyond coffee, you'll find an intentionally curated front shop filled with authentic Japanese goods, fermented products, and some of the best pastries and cookies in town—making it as much a discovery destination as it is a cafe. It's the kind of place where every visit feels special, whether you're settling in for a slow afternoon or popping in to grab something to take home.

A go-to cafe with a mini shop in the front of the store. Always quality pastries, coffee and matcha. Their cookies are insanely good. Tons of different unique items, cook books, and cute merch. A Portland must!

Such a fun place to visit. Amazing (and creative) coffee and pastries, and the curation is amazing- every product feels intentional and interesting with its own story. I stop by every time I’m in Portland, grab salt, spreads, sesame oils, check out new items, and just chill with a coffee. Love it!

pleasantly surprised with the amount of genuine japanese goods! the matcha is LEGIT. not as fresh as the stuff i've had in japan by case of proximity, but pretty darn close doe portland maine. lovely low stimulating environment with primarily asian goods. minimal indoor, but plenty of outdoor seating

One of the best spots in town to grab a pastry and drink. I ordered the matcha black sesame mochi which was to die for. I also ordered a Hojicha latte with a black sesame foam. Both were perfect, the service was quick and helpful. There is also a cute shop in the front of the store and the coffee is in the back.

Adorable shop with fermented goods in the front and a matcha cafe in the back. The atmosphere is special and I felt transported to Japan as soon as I walked in. Staff was very helpful. Tried the miso maple cold foam cold brew and it was great. Also had the matcha butter mochi which was perfectly chewy (butter mochi is hard to come by outside Hawaii and California so I was shocked). Highly recommend this place!!!
