Crema's Take

Nestled right across from a Philadelphia park, Thunder Mug Cafe is a Black-owned neighborhood gem that welcomes you with genuinely warm barista service and an immaculate, comfortable space perfect for lingering over work or conversation. Their coffee is solid and their seasonal offerings keep things interesting, but it's really the thoughtful atmosphere—complete with excellent bagels and pastries—that makes this spot feel like a place where you actually belong, not just pass through.

This was a super convenient and comfortable place to grab some coffee and something to eat and sit down and get some work done. I got a large latte (they were running a special for Black History month) and a delicious donut. Seating was comfortable and free WiFi was easy to get on. Several customers popped in for different takeout orders. The service was very attentive - he made sure that he got the drinks exactly the way everyone wanted them and offered to heat up any food items that might require heating. Also I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't too difficult to find parking within half a block of the cafe.

I really wanted to like this place and support a local Black-owned business, but unfortunately my experience fell short. When I walked in, the café was empty, yet the space looked like it hadn’t been wiped down or cleaned recently. Tables and surfaces appeared dirty, which made the overall atmosphere feel neglected. Since it wasn’t busy, it was hard to overlook. I ordered a spinach pastry, which actually tasted pretty good. However, I told the staff member I was dining in, and I wasn’t offered the option to have it warmed. I had to ask, which felt odd for something that’s typically served warm. Lastly, the customer service didn’t feel very welcoming. I was polite and friendly throughout my visit, but that energy wasn’t really reciprocated. Even when I thanked him and wished him a good day, the interaction felt awkward and uninviting. Because of the cleanliness and service, I ended up leaving and going elsewhere to work from, and I don’t see myself returning. I hope this feedback is taken constructively, as I think with better attention to cleanliness and a warmer customer experience, this café could be much better.

Great coffee, fun flavors/seasonal offerings, and an immaculate atmosphere. Right across the street from a nice park too. Couldn’t recommend enough.

This place is great! We were greeted warmly by the barista right away. I only had an herbal tea but it was delicious nonetheless. Their bagels are fantastic as well. There is plenty of seating and it’s a great atmosphere for doing a little work away from home or the office. I definitely want to return to try the Thai PB&J and hang out.

I was only here for coffee and tea this morning, but I really enjoyed the space, was served by an absolute sweetheart of a barista, and appreciated the courtesy of my fellow Cafe goers. A lot of folks were working in the cafe, including taking calls and meetings, but it felt like a open workspace where people were respectful rather than it being particularly silent or overly loud as a place to do work.
