It’s the real deal! The owner and employees are French, and will welcome you in with a “bonjour”. Easily the best pastries I’ve had outside of Europe, and I’ve looked long and hard! The baguettes are delicious, too.
I am a local. I love bread more than life, and there is an enormous amount of love in the bread and pastries La Fournette bakes. The baguettes are truly rustic, and craggily. They are deeply scored which creates lovely, beautiful ridges that deepen the flavor. The bite is so satisfyingly crackly, the glutenous gases that release create a crescendo of subtle flavors and textures. You will be hard-pressed to find a more authentic, consistently high quality French bakery in Chicago. Favorites— Saucisson sandwich, the beignets, and, of course, the croissants.
We were happy to find this cozy and pleasant pastry shop. It was a 50 min walk from where we were, but it was worth it to escape the boring and plain touristic options we saw around the hotels around the Loop. You open the doors and immediatly smell the aromas of good butter and flour. The staff is friendly and welcoming. We loved the croissants and we ordered a loaf of bread to take back to St Louis, and it tasted great next morning! The coffee is not the greatest, but it is ok.
Went there with a friend, got an almond croissant and hazelnut and cinnamon bread. I liked the almond croissant, friend liked the hazelnut and cinnamon bread, small bakery, good neighborhood.
This is the real deal French patisserie, staff even speak French in the background. That’s how you know it’s authentic. I ordered an amazing almond croissant, best I’ve had in Chicago. It’s clear they use quality ingredients they’ve put a lot of thought into. Fast service, didn’t wait long to get my order. They had good looking baguettes I wish I could’ve tried, maybe next time. Overall I definitely recommend La Fournette, worth a visit.
