Istanbul Express

In the south Indian desert that is Oakland it is very refreshing to see a stalwart take root in Berkeley. Everything Idly Express touches is savory gold. If you haven't spent time in Madras this will give you a good simulation - the music, the heavy smell of filter coffee in the air, the coffee itself....it all adds towards the small hustling and bustling vegetarian "hotels" one finds in Madras. The food is unapologetically spicy and that's good. It keeps the flavors and the textures close the source. The soaked idlis were decadent as were the crunchy vadas. The korma had that sharpness to it and the benne dosa's life force ran all over my palm as I devoured it like a mild-mannered Bakasura at the local village. The place is small and very functional. It's not date night material unless your date is an adventurous eater whose idea of Indian food is all the stereotypical north indian fare. Then, this place is the beginning of an adventure. Beware, travel with a bottle of lassi, for the road is spicy ahead.

I got the mega tiffin, which was enormous and delicious. The vada and dosa were especially good (and the idly only slightly behind them). Tomato chutney was 🔥. Pqr is excellent. Why haven't you eaten here yet?

We've eaten at the restaurant 4-5 times since it's opening. Service is always speedy and the food arrives within 5-10 mins consistently. The staff are friendly & attentive. Nice to have tasty South Indian food in Berkeley. Our favorites are the ghee podi idly, medhu vadai and masala dosa. The thali is great to share with someone if you aren't too hungry. The curd rice in the thali is creamy and delicious. The chai and filter coffee are must haves! Bonus tip: The dosa batter in the takeout fridges make crispy golden brown dosas. Highly recommend!

Great experience. Authentic south Indian food. Fast service. One of the best Indian food chains in the bay area, happy to have them in berkeley now. Super fast and friendly service. Lots of well marked vegan options including vegan masala chai and filter coffee. Hope they can add a vegan benne dosa as well :)
