Yokai Musubi
2190 W Burnside St, Portland, OR
Crema's Take
“Yokai Musubi is a beloved Hawaiian-Japanese spot where the onigiri and musubi are the real stars, consistently praised for tasting authentically like what you'd find in Japan or Hawaii rather than watered-down versions. The team here is patient and genuinely friendly, taking time to help you explore their full range of offerings without rushing you out the door, which pairs perfectly with their affordable prices and family-friendly vibe. Whether you're grabbing a quick musubi or settling in with their specialty drinks and pastries, this is where Portland goes when craving that honest, homemade quality that locals actually crave.”

Saw a post on FB about Yokai and we tried it that weekend. Got a wide variety to sample. All delicious. Patient and friendly staff as we decided how many of which items. Really delicious. I was suspect of the tuna salad (not usually a flavorI like), but wow, it was great! We'll be back. Great prices too!
Okay...let me start with the food, because that's why I came here. Being a "local" born and raised in Hawaii, the food I tried hits the spot. Especially nice is that they fully co er spam musubi in nori (seaweed). Not a narrow slice that many fakers do. The rice to spam ratio is perfect. Only thing I'd like to see is a bit of marin/shoyu marinade on spam...to make it really "local". I tried both the tuna mayo and teri-salmon onigiri...perfect! But the killer... BUTTER MOCHI. As "locals" say in Hawaii..."broke da mouth",meaning oh-so-good. Now for location, yuk! But you gotta start somewhere. Hey guys...maybe check out Lloyd Center. I hear they are trying to make a comeback and rent is cheap. Also...more walk in and parking! A little tip...print your name on outside of those white carry out bags. People need to know you're in Portland. I'm tired of making musubi for my co-workers. I plan to head back to try more of their menu! Ono-lish (tasty)!
I was recommended this place when I was looking for really good onigiri that tastes like what I got in Japan. I've been craving it for weeks. So when a friend got me onigiri here from doordash, and it was pretty good. So I had to check it out in person. And they nailed it. The seafood texture, the rice taste, the amount of filling. They even have the wrappers like in Japan! And it was so fresh tasting! The shop is super tiny, the two guys behind the counter were super friendly, and you can only fit like a handful of people in there. But what you're getting is the best darn onigiri in all of Portland.
This is where I'll be getting my future musubi and onigiri fix. Their ume onigiri is delicious and packed and not as stingy as what you get in Hawaii. Price-wise, it's very affordable and they make great walking and picnic snacks when you want to enjoy one of many of parks across downtown I'm still waiting for their tuna shiso onigiri so will need to be back soon!
Food- This was my first time trying onigiri and I will say it was alright. The spicy tuna isn't spicy at all. Not even a hint 😭. The rice is cold which is normal. But id rate it a solid 6/10. But the "Taiyaki" on the other hand was absolutely delicious. They serve it fresh and warm so you gotta wait like 5 min. But its worth it. I'll definitely come back to order that again. 😋 Service- The lady I talked to at the counter was very nice and welcoming. Good service.
