Crema's Take

Oriental Express Cafe is an unpretentious hole-in-the-wall spot in San Gabriel where authenticity and value reign supreme—think genuine Chinese home cooking, not Americanized takeout, with generous combo meals that somehow clock in under eight dollars and come loaded with soup, rice, and tea. The stripped-down strip mall setting and no-frills presentation won't win any design awards, but regulars rave about the incredibly kind staff and the honest, affordable food that prioritizes substance over Instagram appeal. It's the kind of place where you go to actually eat well and fill your stomach without the pretense.

Quick note - Didn't eat here (thank goodness). Review covers the service and atmosphere, but I guess you can say the place left a bad taste in my mouth. I asked a simple question about a business next door to the female staff closing up the restaurant. She had a terrible attitude all without any provocation - practically shouted me out the door. Who would want to try any food from such a vile personality?

It may not be the most Instagram worthy location but it is great. The food might not look pretty but you're getting good food. Too many places try too hard to look pretty, this place isn't messing around, you point and move on. Simple and fast, but the quantity and quality is there. You will be getting good food and a large portion.

I don't know much about traditional Chinese food, I'm very accustomed to American fast food that people call Chinese food. So I didn't enjoy the chow mein. However, the staff was incredibly nice, helpful, and attentive. I think the place is a cool little hole-in-the-wall Chinese stop, but it's just not my taste. The floor and overall presentation of the eating area is less than desired, but we still had a nice meal.

What can I say...?? This is some cheap Hole-in-The-Wall Chinese Hot Tray Combination Food in a tiny non-descript strip mall setting when you want to fill your stomach. Free Drink + Comes with Soup & Rice. It's decent. It's good by Hot Tray Combination Chinese Food Standards, lol. Lady is very nice. Sodas in the fridge on the right- COKE or SPRITE. NO RESTROOMS. Limited Parking Lot and Street Parking. So I got some little Omelette thing with an egg cooked on top, some Chinese Curry Chicken and some Chinese Ginger Chicken. I was thinking of the very popular old Xiao Mei Restaurant in San Gabriel years ago, which was actually pretty darned good for what it was and decided to come here, my reason for today's visit.

Authentic and CHEAP! It's pretty close to authentic Chinese as it gets no general tsos here. And did I mention cheap?! Holy moly 4 items plus rice plus tea plus soup for like 7 something what?! The portions are huge too!!! Check em out. Bring a Chinese friend lol
