Park Avenue Cafe

Crema's Take
“Tucked into Portland, this cozy neighborhood gem strikes that rare balance between a quick espresso stop and a lingering destination, with genuinely skilled baristas who clearly take pride in both their craft and their customers. The atmosphere is warm and inviting—the kind of place where a breakfast sandwich on an onion bagel tastes better than it should—and the staff remembers faces, making regulars feel genuinely welcomed rather than merely tolerated.”

Was between a 3 and 4 star. I've been here multiple times over the last few years. I do really like the atmosphere inside, it's so cozy and cute and most of the staff is pretty nice. The lattes I've had have tasted a bit burnt, not the best in the area. The food is where I feel like this place lacks the most - I do really like the breakfast bagel and chorizo burrito, but I've had the submarine sandwich which was just too much hard bread, and some of the other wraps have ingredients that you'd want to be cold like hard boiled egg, lettuce, veggies, etc. and then they grill the wraps, which is a nice touch but leaves you with all this hot wilty lettuce...the lettuce often has lots of the crunchy rib part too and not so much the yummy leafy part of the romaine. Not enough cream cheese on the bagels, either.
Had a park avenue breakfast sandwich on an onion bagel (photo)--fast and delicious! Lovely atmosphere, great service and staff. Clean restroom.
This place is awesome and I plan to come back as often as I can, but I wanted to post a review specifically to talk about Chikai (apologies if I got the spelling wrong). He is welcoming, thoughtful, and more attentive than I could have believed. My first time here, there was an old man sitting near the bathrooms (out of sight of the register and the kitchen) who got up to dispose of his dishes. He was balancing two plates, a coffee mug, and a cane and he wasn’t holding on very well. Before I myself could even register he might need help, Chikai swooped in and took the dishes for him. No fuss, just smiles and “Can I help you?” The third time I came in (Chikai wasn’t here the second time but the staff was great that time as well) I just wanted a bagel sandwich. It was for here, he saw me hesitate about getting a drink, and then asked if I wanted water. It’s such a little thing, but it meant a lot. To management, you’ve got a keeper there. Thanks for being great every time, Peter
I got a breakfast croissant, it was delicious! My coffee was great the young man behind the counter was very friendly as was the owner making the coffee. Will for sure be back.
Such a charming, cozy cafe. I'm not generally a huge fan of cafes, I feel the market is flooded with them, but I'll consider this place an exception. You can tell even without reading it in the menu that everything is made in house. The pasta, the pastries, even the bread for your toast. The coffees are rich and beautiful. The salmon lox is delicious too. My favorite spot is next to the window underneath the Open sign so I get the mix of flora, wood, and a soft neon glow. Such a great place to relax.
