Crema's Take

Carpet Cafe is a welcoming neighborhood spot where baristas take real care with each drink, serving macchiatos with the kind of attention that makes you notice the difference. The vibe skews toward the slow and social—think laptop-friendly mornings and genuine connections with regulars—while their espresso tonics and thoughtful beverage work prove they're serious about the craft without taking themselves too seriously.

I had a macchiato on 3 occasions here. It was perfect and served elegantly on a wood tray. This last time it was explained that the barista was on a lunch break, and the person that took my order made instead of a macchiato a large drink in a to-go cup about the size of large cappuccino. I said, sorry but I had asked for a macchiato for here. They then were opening the drink in the to go cup to pour it out into a glass, but I guess in the process reconsidered and they asked if I actually wanted a remake. They asked me to explain what a macchiato is, and I said I really just wanted espresso with very little milk just a little foam. I had to explain a few times a few different ways (I'm not a coffee expert). A few minutes later a got a glass filled with a grayish liquid almost to the top (2 to 3 times the size of a macchiato). The macchiato I got before was perfection. A dark rich espresso with a dollop of pristine white foam. I took the drink from the bar but in retrospect I should have asked for a voucher or something similar for another time, or a refund. I put the drink they gave me in the dirty dish tray. It looked like if someone used watered down milk that tuned kind of grey and filled a glass with it almost to the top. Very unappetizing looking. It was not like a cortado or something well crafted, to which I would have thought, it's ok if it's not really a macchiato. It actually looked is if someone didn't finish a drink and someone added dish water in the sink to wash the glass. There were three people working but I was kind of surprised that the person that was trying to make the drink didn't actually even seem to know what a macchiato is as they were showing me two different glasses and asking me to chose which one I wanted, and they were saying, this is the smallest I have I don't have anything smaller, is this the glass you want?! As if I was asking for a strange drink that is unheard of while it's on their menu. I also had to explain that before it was served on a tray with a sparkling water (they were asking me how it was made!?). I'm kind of miffed I thought this could have been a cool coffee shop to visit (the singer from Turnstile was there having a something as a customer so that's pretty cool).

I’m excited to see what this place becomes - we went for the opening day around 5pm, it was around a 25-30 minute wait for two lattes, line halfway down the block to get into the cafe and the flagship store. I got the six-spice latte with oat milk and it was about $9 plus tip. The latte was super solid, but you can’t go wrong with good neighbor coffee. The ambiance was really nice, lots of people. It’s nice to have a coffee shop/third space in my neighborhood that is open later. They also give you a buzzer to let you know when your drink is ready instead of calling out your name. I’m super excited to see this place do well!
