Crema's Take

Charly's is a beloved Flagstaff institution where live music, creative cocktails, and nostalgic charm converge in one spacious, welcoming space—the kind of place locals return to for anniversaries and regulars already know by heart. Beyond the craft drinks and signature creations, they're known for doing classics like French onion soup exceptionally well, with rich, properly executed comfort food that pairs perfectly with their adventurous bar program. It's the rare spot that feels equally at home hosting families for early dinner, couples celebrating decades together, or anyone seeking that genuine local venue vibe that can't be manufactured.

We dined in the bar area with the kids for dinner, maybe around 6 or so. It was a great experience, our waitress was very attentive with our orders. I could see how this is a fun local, music venue. The food was great too, we would definitely come back.

Found out about this hotel and restaurant from our underground tour and came back to try it out. They had fun custom drinks that were delicious. We had the French onion soup and house salad for starters but were very good. We also had the broken hearted chicken pasta overall was good but lacked some flavor. It is a historical building and so fun to look at. Server was very friendly and helpful. Would recommend for cocktails for sure.

The service was ok, but the food and drinks were terrible. We ordered drinks, two beers and a manhattan. They said the bar was a little backed up, which we get, but we ate our entire meals and still No drinks. The table next to us came while we were eating our apps and got the cocktails right away. We never saw our waiter again, no refills on waters or checking in on the food. Water glasses were empty since we had gotten our appetizers. We grabbed a waitress walking by asking about our drinks and she said the bar was busy. We mentioned how the tables around us had gotten theirs and we were done our meals so to just cancel the drinks. About 4 minutes later, drinks came out as we are about to ask for the check. We said we canceled them but would take them so they weren’t wasted. He said they couldn’t give drinks for free, so we said how about they just take off an app to cover it. We were really looking forward to trying the local beer. They said they couldn’t do that and were going to poor them out. When the bill came, the 20% was already added to the bill. I ordered a French dip sandwich. The waiter asked me if I wanted peppers and the cheese on the sandwich. I said yes assuming this was a normal question to ask. They charged me extra for these items on my sandwich. When we wanted to talk to the waiter more about our experience and if he could talk to the manager about our situation, he was dismissive and walked away as soon as the bill was paid.

I met my wife here 33 years ago, so I thought I would bring her back here for our anniversary. The place did not disappoint. After being seated in a spacious dining room with wall to wall dated artifacts of Flagstaff's golden era, we were provided with an ample menu. The place now features a couple of full bars with plenty of things to do. Gone is the hostel, turned into a rather swanky historical B&B experience. I asked for recommendations, and the server showed her knowledge of the menu. We went with the Navajo Taco and the birria tacos - both were outstanding. The birria tacos were as good as anything you could find on an LA taco truck, which is a gastronomic zenith for taco snobs. This Navajo taco topped the one we had out in Monument Valley, by far. This was an outstanding stop - excellent staff, beautiful surroundings, and wonderful food. Its great to see that some things may change, and do so for the better. Highly recommend.

We found Charly's because I was looking for a place that served French Onion soup - and it did not disappoint! The broth was rich and salty (which I prefer over sweet), loaded with onions, and perfectly done cheese. **chef's kiss** Others in my party enjoyed the Bartenders (chicken tenders), which were nicely battered and juicy, and the fried shrimp. Both came with generous portions of waffle fries. There were enough options for all tastes and ages. Our server, Zack, was also excellent! Heads up, since this is a restaurant at a historic hotel, they do add "historic preservation " fees to the bill. That was new for me... All in this was a great place to eat and would definitely recommend.
