Crema's Take

This beloved Helena breakfast spot excels at the fundamentals—perfectly cooked eggs, crispy hash browns, and standout dishes like their exceptional corned beef hash and huckleberry pancakes—all delivered with genuine warmth in a cozy, family-friendly setting. While the space is admittedly tight and service can be inconsistent, locals keep returning for the dependable comfort food and that rare combination of homey hospitality and quality execution that makes it feel like a true neighborhood gathering place.

This place is a family favorite! We had breakfast and each of us chose something completely different and it was all delicious. Our server delivered our piping hot and checked on us to make sure we were enjoying our meal & get is drink refills.

Usually, this is my #1 pick for Helena; however, this visit was very disappointing. Their version of a Monte Cristo sandwich had very little flavor; I couldn’t distinguish the ham from the turkey. The bacon had the best flavor of the entire sandwich, which is made with their French toast. The onion rings I usually love came out rubbery & tough to chew because they sat in the oil too long, I guess. The half Italian coffee with half hot chocolate was AWFUL: It tasted faintly of chocolate & mostly, warm water—for $3.75, with one refill. The only thing great about it was the whipping cream on top. About that refill: My server, Dawn, was mostly inattentive at best, & I’m not a needy customer—just hungry after driving a 100 miles to eat at Steve’s Cafe! Dawn never even mentioned that a free refill came with the Mocha Cafe drink—I found out at the end, when I saw it on the receipt! Alivia was the server who saved this from being a 1-star review: She asked if I needed help as I sat there, wondering where Dawn was…& I asked her about the refill, which she happily got for me in a to-go cup with a lid! It made me feel so much better, that the next time I’m in Helen’s a 100 miles from home, I’ll ask for Alivia (yes, it’s pronounced, “Olivia”, but had a unique spelling which made it memorable for me.)

Tiny cramped space. Had to move 3 times for others to get by. Stack of cakes and a cup of fruit. Glass of OJ. Try to get someone's attention and they turn their backs or look the other way like you don't exist. Top cake all batter. 75% raw. Had a server being a second plate to remove it. Declined a new cake Togo. OJ was almost gone before the food arrived. Was never offered a refill or something else. Never had the chance to ask. Ran out of syrup about 1/4 through 3 cakes. No drink to wash it down. Cup of fruit...horrible. cantaloupe had no taste. Honeydew tasted like unripe cucumber. Id have preferred a banana. I left a 20 on $15 tab. Not sure why. Won't go back

Updated: Just took one of my sons there this morning (Thursday, 9ish a.m.) for breakfast. We both ordered off the Gluten free menu and he had Hucklberry pancakes and I had the Huckleberry waffle! Service was quick, the staff was friendly, engaging, and attentive, and we were in and out in less than 45 minutes! ... Steve's is our favorite place to eat in Helena! We live about 90 miles away, and when we go to Helena, we go to Steve's! It is a great pre-incentive for my husband for having to go through Costco with me. 😆 This is such a great little diner. One thing I love is that they have a separate gluten-free menu that includes breakfast and lunch! I don't have to second guess (or ask!) what is okay for me to order. The service has always been great— every hostess, every server—they all appear to love their job! Even when they are busy, they are attentive! My favorite menu item is the gluten-free Huckleberry Waffle. (I even remembered to take a picture, even though I was already elbow deep in it!) I order it every time, along with a Denver Omlette and hashbrowns. (I have a big appetite, and it shows! Lol) My husband jumps around the menu more than I do, but he LOVES the bacon and will get a side of it with whatever he is ordering!

This place may have the best corned beef hash ever! Super tender, great flavor and they get the basics right- eggs cooked correctly, hash browns crispy, fast and friendly service.
