Black Bird Bookstore and Cafe
4541 Irving St, San Francisco, CA
Crema's Take
“Black Bird is a thoughtfully designed third space that weaves together a curated bookstore, solid drip coffee, and genuine hospitality across multiple inviting areas—from a cozy reading nook for kids to a sun-dappled back garden anchored by a plant shop and wooden train table. The staff here are the real draw, creating a welcome that feels authentic rather than performative, making it equally suited for a solo work session with a good book or a family afternoon where everyone finds their own corner to settle into. If you're looking for specialty coffee that's executed well rather than experimental, paired with a bookstore experience that actually feels lovingly curated rather than incidental, this is worth seeking out.”

This is a cafe with a bookstore for adults, children, a small reading nook for kids, and a back garden with a plant shop, and a wooden train track table! Thank you so much for providing a much needed rest area where parents can sip their coffee in peace for 15 min while their toddler plays with the toys. I got the Houjicha latte, if you do get it make sure to stir it so that the Houjicha from the bottom mixes well with the frothy milk on top. Super important, I didn't do that and I tasted milk for the first 75% of the drink. Their houjicha latte comes unsweetened, which is great for me, as you can always add sweetener later but you can't make it less sweet. I'd love to try their matcha latte and espresso latte next time! Oh and the staff are super friendly and helpful too. We will be back!
Bookstore and coffee? Sign me up! Partner & I had their hojicha and drip coffee. Drip was great. They really know their coffee! Unfortunately, hojicha is.... not great. Feels like 90% milk with a *hint* of hojicha. No aroma or flavor. Maybe we got a bad batch, but would recommend sticking to coffee to play it safe. They carry baked goods from local bakeries. Great selection of books and cute merch. Amazing ambiance - clean, lush, and cozy with super cute outdoor patio with plants. Love the kid-friendly sections, though it could get rowdy with inattentive parents! Highly recommend and would come back again if I'm ever in the area.
Black Bird Books & Coffee is such a good spot. Perfect vibe, perfect people. It feels cozy and welcoming the second you walk in, and the staff are genuinely kind and easy to talk to. It’s the kind of place where you end up staying longer than you planned, just flipping through books or sitting with your coffee. Nothing feels forced or trendy , it’s just calm, warm, and thoughtfully done. One of those places that makes you want to come back and bring a friend next time.
Such a lovely spot in San Francisco, especially for families. I brought my kids and they loved the loft area, the book selection, and the cozy vibe. The staff was super friendly, and the café was great—I had a perfectly made cortado and a few delicious passion fruit donuts for the kiddos. Such a nice place to hang out and enjoy a beautiful Saturday morning. ☀️📚
Loved it. The bookstore has a great selection, and the kids' section is fantastic! I loved the concept; the store was extremely clean, easy to navigate, and a great place to enjoy your coffee. Staff super friendly!
