Crema's Take

Tucked inside Manchester's Bookery, Barba Costas pulls off that rare combination of serious espresso craft and genuinely welcoming slowness—regulars rave about their silky flat whites and willingness to customize traditional sizes, while the back-of-bookstore setting makes lingering over coffee feel natural rather than rushed. Beyond the espresso-forward menu, they've earned real affection for thoughtful touches like maple sugar at the condiments bar and house-made treats like peanut butter cookies that pair perfectly with their creamy hot chocolate.

They fixed up a great oat milk mocha. I also enjoy getting to sip my coffee sitting in the back of a bookstore. I only regret that I couldn't get it served in a mug and save using a disposable cup. I ordered a few minutes before they closed, but I would respectfully suggest that customers could be trusted to leave a ceramic mug in a dish return tote when finished, OR ... the closed coffee shop might not suffer from having one left on a table until the next business day. Just a thought. For nearly $10/latte, it feels like the privilege of a proper mug could be afforded even at closing time. Anyway...peanut gallery opinion shared.

Excellent flat white. They offered a traditional 8oz if you prefer less milk. It was very silky, and the espresso is great and not acidic. And they have maple sugar at their condiments counter - incredible. Super nice baristas (unlike other great coffee shops)

Nice quiet coffee shop in the Bookery. Very good peanut butter cookies and nice chocolatey hot chocolate which was very creamy. Perfect for the cold November day. Got a black coffee which was good, just could have been stronger. Staff were great, friendly and very personable. Stopped 2x in one day I liked it so much.

There are differences from Cat Alley Cafe that stand out from the previous business,🐈 Cat Alley Cafe. They serve you coffee ☕ instead of you getting it yourself. If you order prepared foods, such as waffles or bagels 🥯, they bring it to your table. That is appreciated 👍! The menu is limited but it makes it easier to decide! There was a choice of bagels with toppings. The pastries and muffins that were available looked okay. The Dark 🌑 Matter coffee ☕ and the Leige 🧇 Waffles with real Vermont maple 🍁 syrup I had were good 👍! Prices for both were reasonable. They also sell bottled drinks, juice 🧃 boxes, fruit and ground coffee to go. What stood out to me is that combined with the Bookery, this is a good place for parents to go. Children have an area that is set up for them to entertain themselves with toys 🧸 and books 📚. The parents have a chance to sit 🪑 down, drink and eat their purchases and talk to another adult. I am going to give this cafe a recommendation.
