Engine Coffee

Crema's Take
“Engine Coffee is a thoughtfully espresso-focused spot where baristas nail the technical details—steamed milk textures and pour-over precision—though their lighter roast profile won't satisfy everyone seeking bold, punchy flavors. It's a genuine hangout space with quality pastries and a welcoming vibe, perfect for lingering conversations, though fair warning: bring a jacket if you visit in winter and skip the laptop work unless your device loves IPv6. The beans from Metric are consistently well-executed, making it a reliable gem for Chicago coffee lovers who appreciate craft over flash.”

Great coffee, bad wi-fi. Their WiFi only supports IPv6 addresses so lots of websites like Reddit or StackOverflow won’t load because they don’t support IPv6. Unacceptable for a cafe to not support IPv4. Every time I mentioned this problem to the staff they were clueless. Staff: Talk to whoever manages your modem / router and tell them to turn IPv4 on, then I’ll change this to a 5-star review.
Great coffee and tasty pastries. It’s a nice place to hang out for awhile. Only downside is it’s 30 outside and the heat is barely on. So many people are sitting at tables with their jackets on.
It was fine, not a big fan of an extremely light roast espresso. I got a Cortana that was steamed well and the micro-foam had a good texture. Didn’t like the vibes much.
I tried the iced Americano and iced oat milk latte, both were decent, but the flavor was a bit too mellow for my taste. I’d probably add an extra shot next time to get a bolder coffee profile. I was hoping to grab something from their bakery selection, but most items were already gone when I visited around 1 PM on a weekday, so get there earlier if you’re looking for food. The environment is cozy and definitely a nice spot to study or work. That said, I had some issues with the Wi-Fi being unstable and weak, which made working a bit frustrating.
This instantly became one of my favorite coffee shops in Chicago! They offer a great selection of beans (from Metric), and I really enjoyed both the pour-over and flat white. The barista was friendly, and there’s plenty of seating including two cozy window corner tables. They also had vinyl playing in the background which added a nice touch to the ambiance.
