Hernando's Underground Cafe

My husband and I visited Underground for the first time since reopening on Valentine’s Day. It was clearly a very busy night, so we understand that our experience may not reflect a typical evening there. We waited about an hour just to receive our drinks. While we tried to be patient given the crowd, we noticed the same delays happening at several nearby tables, and actually saw multiple parties leave before being served. When we ordered, quite a few items from the Valentine’s menu were already unavailable, which we also understood given the holiday. However, when our meals arrived, both steaks (ordered medium rare) were cooked incorrectly. We were each missing one of the two included sides, and we never received the spinach dip that was supposed to come with the meal. After about 2.5 hours, dessert finally arrived and I will say, it was excellent. The bananas foster was absolutely incredible. We may have chosen the toughest night to try it out, but for a $171 bill, we were hoping for a smoother experience. We do hope to return on a less hectic evening and give it another try.

100% recommended this restaurant! We went last night (2/5/26) after hearing about it from some folks and had dinner with my parents. We called because we weren't quite sure what type of place it was and the chef took time to explain all of what they served and just really took time to explain a bunch of stuff to us which was fantastic, before we even got there the service was phenomenal. After getting there we were promptly greeted and told we could sit wherever. I ordered the burger with fries which was absolutely delicious. If I had more room in my stomach after that I would have probably ordered another. The wife ordered crab cakes which were huge and she said we're amazing along with a side of red beans and rice, again, amazing. My mom ordered a burger as well and she doesn't usually eat all of her food but this time she ate everything her stomach could handle, she said hers was amazing. My dad ordered the dirty rice and it was so good another was ordered. They were even accommodating to our 5 month old. Overall this was a fantastic experience and we will definitely be coming back. Our son heard about it and is excited to go and try their food and so is our daughter. We ordered some dirty rice for ourselves to go and our daughter tried a bite and did a little dance. Went out to celebrate a friend’s 40th birthday and had a really good dinner. This place has always been one of Hernando’s favorites, so it’s nice to see it open again. I ordered the salmon with mixed vegetables and it was cooked well and seasoned perfectly — didn’t need to add a thing. We finished with dessert for the birthday girl, which was a great way to end it. You can tell the owners are putting care into what they’re doing, and it shows. Overall, a solid experience and a place I’ll definitely be back to. Glad to have this spot serving Hernando again.

Delicious! 🤤 We stopped in for dinner on our Christmas travels. The food was fast and hot, rich in flavor, and in large portions! We ordered the special (Blackened Red Fish), Chicken crepes, a cheese and sausage app, and the Bananas Foster. So so delicious! The staff were friendly and high chairs made it easy to enjoy dinner with our 1 year old. Only thing that would have made our visit perfect is if there was a changing table in the bathroom. Thanks for a great dinner!

Awesome restaurant, newly reopened under new ownership. The food is delicious and they give large portions. The place is clean and welcoming, and the staff and new owners are wonderful. The Cesar salad is hand made and absolutely wonderful. I'm not usually a fan of salads, but I ate this one so fast I almost forgot to take a photo. I asked for medium rare on my rosemary steak, and unlike many places, that's how it came out. My husband loved the catfish filet and shrimp gumbo, and said their new grits were better than ever. They have daily specials and are bringing out new things to try all the time! Check it out!
