Mattina
2232 Bush St, San Francisco, CA
Crema's Take
“Mattina brings a sophisticated yet genuinely welcoming energy to the Fillmore, with a thoughtfully curated menu that spans from exceptional housemade pastries and creative brunch dishes to housemade pastas that showcase real technique and flavor. The space strikes that rare balance of feeling both fashionable and inviting, making it equally suited for a solo coffee moment or lingering over brunch with friends, though consistency in service can be a bit uneven during busy times. If you're after specialty drinks paired with standout food—think curried salads, milk bread buns, and chocolate torta—this is a destination worth seeking out.”

MATTINA is a brilliant addition to the Fillmore district, offering a fashionable and stylish atmosphere that manages to feel both sophisticated and welcoming. The service is exceptional, warm, professional, and perfectly timed making it an ideal spot for everything from a quick coffee to a long, leisurely lunch. Speaking of lunch, their $26 Weekday Lunch Special is an absolute steal; getting a high quality, three course meal in such a chic setting is easily one of the best deals in San Francisco. The food is outstanding, featuring standout items from their wood fired pizza oven and incredibly fresh, handmade pastas like the rich mushroom truffle tagliatelle. Every detail is thoughtful, right down to the decadent homemade gelato that provides the perfect sweet finish. Whether you're there for the charcoal grilled specialties or the vibrant Cal Italian flavors, MATTINA delivers an impeccable 5-star experience that you'll want to return to again and again.
Food was good. Service on Valentine’s Day was unfortunately lacking. No one came by to talk about the menu, give us water, or take our order for 15+ minutes, and when we did order the server just told us that we got too much and we should cut it down. That could’ve been prevented if someone actually introduced themselves and told us about the menu beforehand. Food came out hot and quickly, so at least there’s that, although the brisket was too salty. We had put on our reservation that we were celebrating a birthday AND an anniversary and they didn’t acknowledge that at all and were in a rush to get us out once we started slowing down (kept asking if we want boxes, bringing the check, etc). Not sure if we’d come back.
My wife and I enjoyed having a Friday brunch at Mattina. There was a broad selection of food and everything was delicious. The jam and biscuit was solid but the highlight was the curried salad on milk bun. For a main course, my wife enjoyed their frittata with vegetables, while I had the fascinated pasta pie with egg. The form factor was fun to eat and the meatballs were delicious, but I wish there were more of them. All the food was generally worth it and a lot of dishes had interesting twists that added great flavor and depth. The coffee is quite affordable and has some great flavors, so it could be nice to hang out and get some work done during quieter hours. I don't know that the restaurant dims the lighting even during the day, so the windows can feel quite bright compared to the rest of the interior.
Overall pasta and tiramisu were amazing and felt worth it but would skip on the appetizers, which didn’t feel worth it. Pasta had amazing texture and great flavors (usually I find pastas under flavored). Our group favorite was pappardelle, lamb cheek was so soft and had hint of sweetness. Tiramisu also one of the best (tho thicker texture than normal). While brussel sprouts and milk bread had good flavor, the texture was a bit hard and didn’t feel worth the price
I’ve had items from both the brunch menu and all-day menu and they are all excellent. The housemade jam, crespelle, milk bread bun, arugula & apple salad, lumache pasta, and chocolate torta are delicious - have never had a bad dish. The servers are super friendly and the ambiance is quiet and relaxing.
