J&S Coffee

Crema's Take
“J&S is a beloved Lawrence institution that feels like a cozy old bookstore come to life, with warm wooden furnishings and genuine hospitality from a manager who genuinely cares about regulars. Their espresso program earns serious acclaim—whether you're ordering a precise cortado or exploring their creative signature drinks—and the shop welcomes everyone from laptop workers to families to folks just passing through town. It's the kind of place where impeccable coffee meets a lived-in, unpretentious atmosphere that makes you want to linger.”

Deserved praise. I don't give five stars because, really, nothing is perfect, but J&S is easily 4.5. Established, not bare and bland like so many new places. Great coffee. (I usually get a cortado with heavy cream, but their Valencia is a nice twist too.) Gregarious owner. Baristas efficient, a little on the chill side, but I'm used to exceedingly warm baristas from a place in COS. High marks all around.
Coffee is phenomenal but service is lackluster. I gave up my booth/seat for a group of older ladies standing up, due to lack of seating, and asked the cafe workers if they could turn on the outside heater so we can sit outside. Their response was "that's on you, if you want to sit outside go ahead, turn it on." After about ten minutes of me trying to troubleshoot the outside gas heater myself, the cafe workers at the counter kept looking and didn't even think to come outside to help. Disappointing.
SUPER cozy atmosphere. All the benches and tables are wooden and it feels like a comfy old bookstore in the back. Stephen the manager (owner?) was the funniest nicest old guy ever. J&S also has chai I’ve ever had in the US. Really authentic tasting. Definitely a perfect place for studying and reading.
Friendly staff, warm and cute decor, plenty of seating. Indoor and outdoor seating. Yummy coffee. Go here. Give them money. Drink good coffee.
Great coffee shop with reasonable prices that I stopped by on my way out of Lawrence this morning. Large variety of coffee to choose from. The barista explained things well and even offered to make anything I wanted that they are capable of doing. I appreciated the extra mile to offer custom orders. My coffee was made quickly and was delicious. The atmosphere was great and the regulars that came through were treated as friends by the staff. Apparently you can ask to see the roaster/freshly roasted beans in house but I didn't have time to do that this morning. Guess I will have to go back again!
