Saigon Shack
114 Macdougal St, New York, NY
Crema's Take
“This beloved Vietnamese spot in New York has earned its loyal following with generous portions of traditional pho and banh mi that deliver authentic flavors at surprisingly accessible prices for the location. While quality can be inconsistent (some rave about the tender, smoky lemongrass chicken and crispy spring rolls, while others have had mishaps with cold sandwiches), the attentive service and welcoming vibe make it a reliable go-to for both quick grab-and-go meals and lingering conversations over a steaming bowl.”

Oxtail pho was a delightful experience, featuring generous portions of tender meat. However, the price had increased by $5 compared to the previous year. The wait staff was attentive, ensuring that our water refills were promptly attended to. It’s worth noting that the restaurant only accepts cash payments.
I’ve been coming to Saigon Shack to dine in or take out since 2021 but this past Tuesday I ended up getting the spicy brisket bahn mi and it’s had my stomach in shambles. It was cold and didn’t taste like the last time I got the spicy brisket rice bowl (in 2023/4) but I was hungry and now I’m paying for it. Also the service wasn’t that good, the server who I hadn’t seen before was kind of rude. When I asked for no mayo on the bahn mi he laughed at me, that made me feel some kind of way. Anyways, if I do come back I’ll just stick to the chicken pho.
I’ve been coming here for years and I’m glad they’re still around. Decent vegetarian options. I had the vegetarian pho, the rice bowl, vermicelli bowl, and bahn mi. The bahn mi is a good size you can the entire thing if you’re really hungry. Get the bowl either vermicelli or rice. Has more veggies in it than the bahn mi. The vegetarian pho was good. All of these come with soy protein. I’ve gone different times. During the week it can get busy especially during colder months. If it’s just you and one other person your wait won’t be as long. More than 3 is a wait. Cash only. I’ve taken other people here. This last time I sat at the bar. Other times outside when it was really busy. For the amount of food, it’s average price. Staff just depends. It’s a casual spot. One of the better Vietnamese spots I go to in the city. Fast service, decent food.
Came here for the first time and had a pork chop banh mi which was normal, the bread wasn’t that crunchy. Had sweet potatoes fries with mayo sauce and it was good. Had fried springs rolls and they were ok. Overall the food was nice but not the best Vietnamese food Ive ever had. I could come here back to try other dishes. Good service and normal atmosphere. Note: They dont accept card and this is a downsize for the customers.
Great pho spot. I love their lemon grass chicken it’s sweet, smoky, and incredibly juice. The portion is very big and the price is very affordable especially considering the location. Just to keep in mind that there might be a little wait line. We came here on a Monday 6pm and there were no available seats. Definitely will come again and try their rice dishes :)
