Moon's Kitchen Cafe

Crema's Take
“Moon's Kitchen Cafe is a beloved Boise breakfast destination with genuinely scratch-made food and a fun, kitschy atmosphere that keeps locals coming back for years. While the bustling no-reservation policy means you might wait 30-40 minutes during peak times, the carefully prepared dishes (especially those crispy potatoes) and warm, family-friendly vibe make it worth the patience—just arrive early and embrace the community feeling that comes with a full house.”

Wow, this food is amazing! Service started off rocky (I watched 5 people behind the bar look very confused) but it picked up a bit after ordering. The food has such great taste and the potatoes are amazing. I’ll definitely be back when in town!
It had been about 3 years since we last dined at Moon’s so I was excited to try out the food at their new location. Sad to say that I was greatly disappointed with the food. Food ordered: John Wayne Breakfast, Chicken Fajita Hash and a single pancake. The John Wayne Breakfast was underwhelming and disappointing for its price. The biscuit tasted rather doughy and almost raw, and the gravy came out cold, mediocre and lacking in flavor. The bacon was overdone and was just about close to burning by the time it was placed on my plate. The pancake was the most disappointing part of the breakfast because I was looking forward to it… I was expecting to get a taste of or something close to that signature diner pancake flavor but for whatever reason it tasted gummy/rubbery… it reminded me of a pancake batter that has been over-mixed and if you know anything about making good pancakes you know not to over-mix the batter. For whatever reason, the syrup tasted like it was watered down; almost as though they were trying to stretch it? I found myself using way more syrup than I typically do and even then it still remained flat. Besides that it had a weird flavor that my husband also agreed on. On the brighter side, the chicken fajita hash was pretty tasty and I will admit that their portions are generous given how pricey the food is. I was however disappointed in the J.W. Breakfast and their pancake. The hot chocolate I got was good, although I needed to water it down because it was insanely sweet. Service was great and our server was a gem! Atmosphere was relaxed and comfy. Would we eat here again? Probably not as it isn’t worth the price.
A great local spot serving fresh scratch made food. No reservations so get there early or be prepared to wait a little, I was told it was going to be a about 35 min and it was exactly 35 minutes, so they have their system down pretty good. Our table overlooked 8th Street, great for people watching. All of the food was tasty and you could tell they make it all fresh. Would definitely recommend.
Visited recently after not having been for years. Still a great breakfast and great service. Food options are tasty and well prepared and they still have a fun kitchy decor vibe even in the new location. Will definitely be back!
The most interesting thing about eating at Moon's is actually just finding the darn place. While it's address is on Main its main entrance equipped with escalators to the second floor are located off of the pedestrian plaza without a street number address to be found anywhere. I was pleasantly surprised with, considering how hard it was to find, that it was as busy as it was and with predominantly a younger crowd. Something about the decor really clicked with me and Becca who attended to my table was especially pleasant and very attentive. Another funny thing was the pollished concrete floor and how it interacted with the ball type castors on the bottom of the chairs. This combination made it especially easy for my chair to move around and glide away from the table when I applied any kind of pressure against the table. Kind of had to wedge my feet to the floor to keep me in place. Would you otherwise notice this; I doubt it. But I'm off that way. Fun place, good food, music not too loud....yes I would return, especially since I know how to find it now.
