Urban Prairie Coffee
5606 Johnson Dr, Mission, KS
Crema's Take
“Urban Prairie Coffee is a bustling Mission favorite where baristas famously announce orders in near-whispers, creating an intimate café atmosphere despite the crowd. The spacious interior invites lingering conversations and laptop sessions, with the adjoining board game gallery offering a natural overflow space when things get packed during peak hours. Even coffee skeptics find themselves charmed by this place—it's the kind of neighborhood spot that draws people in for the vibe as much as the cup.”

When I looked this location up to scope out their menu, the AI summary on Google Maps said people note that the baristas barely whisper the names of orders. I immediately remembered reading that when, as my order was being rang in at the register during a rush, the barista to the right set a drink down and said the customer's name so quietly that I could barely hear it as the closest person. I came to sit and journal, so I would have been happy to clear out of the busy entry way and wait for my name to be called, but with that functional issue I thought it better to leave my bag at my preferred spot and hover by the counter with the to go drinkers. Thumbs up for the pastries and seasonal coffee menu.
Really great place that is frequently busy. If you plan to stay and enjoy your meal there - keep in mind it might be packed during peak hours. The board game place next door is a good overflow seating area too, and a cool place in itself!
Great coffee shop. They have plenty of room to sit and enjoy sipping your beverage while visiting with a friend. The board game gallery is filled with a variety of games unmatched and laughter and fun fills the air. This is a delightful place to come and stay awhile. Our drinks were made to perfection and the staff is very knowledgeable and kind. We did not order the pastries but they looked delightful. Definitely will on the next visit.
I had the Chicken Shawarma with fries, and yellow rice, with a couple falafels. The falafels were serviceable, the sauce was okay. Everything else tasted sad, and absolutely not worth the money. :(
To be upfront... My mom said I should never use the word "hate." So, I "severely dislike" coffee. But I love this cafe! I never would have thought to stop in if not for being next door at Mission: Board Game and wanting a snack. The door is open between the two, and they make for a great combination. Even though board games drew me in the first time, I will certainly be back for the grinds (aka food). The "farm-to-table" ingredients are every bit as tasty as you'd hope. The sandwiches and breakfast items we ate were masterfully prepared, and the ones in the case that we haven't yet tried look just as delicious. Finally, the prices were perfectly reasonable.
