Crema's Take

Hot Cakes in Capitol Hill is a dessert-focused café that turns coffee into an afterthought to their real star: perfectly portioned, creatively inventive hot cakes and lava cakes with flavor combinations that feel genuinely surprising (think dark chocolate with peanut butter and toasted peanuts, or their beloved Melted Snowball). The space has an infectious, upbeat energy where people genuinely light up knowing what's about to arrive at their table, making it the kind of place that works equally well for a solo indulgence or lingering with friends over seasonal specialties.

I love their hot cakes. The fact that I love the most is that it’s the perfect portion of dessert- not too large or not too small. I love their chocolate decadence hot cake. Price is a bit higher with $15-18 per hot cake but it’s absolutely worth it on a cozy & rainy day.

Hot Cakes is pure dessert joy. The Capitol Hill location has such a fun, upbeat vibe — the kind of place where everyone looks happy because they know what’s coming. The Melted Snowball is ridiculous in the best way, and the toffee pudding is rich, warm, and completely worth rearranging your plans for. Ice cream melting into cake, sauce everywhere, zero regrets. Full disclosure: my son is the saucier and makes the sauces and caramels… but I’d say the same thing even if he didn’t. Everything is consistently delicious, the staff is great, and the energy feels exactly right for Capitol Hill. Come hungry, leave happy, and don’t overthink it — just go.

Overall experience was okay. I ordered the dark chocolate hot cake with peanut butter, toasted peanuts, and vanilla ice cream. It felt overpriced for the portion size, and the cake was served in a paper cup, which was disappointing for an $18 dessert. I expected better presentation for the price. It’s not a must-try, but it could be enjoyable if you’re craving something sweet.

Yesterday was our first time at Hot Cakes and we loved it. Even my husband, who usually isn’t a big fan of chocolate cookies, absolutely loved his. I ordered two lava cakes: the Decadent and the Peanut Butter and both were amazing. Rich, gooey, and full of flavor. I’ll definitely come back whenever I’m in Seattle… or maybe you guys should open one in Portland!

Great desserts, a bit pricy but really hits the spot for a late night sweet treat. Very creative flavors including monthly/seasonal specials. Spicy mocha I give 3/5 (wasn’t that spicy/unique) but the Jaipur Chai molten cake w ice cream was a 5/5 and the main reason we came. Crème brûlée 4/5
