Crema's Take

Tucked away as a no-frills counter service beside an office building, Lucca delivers legitimately gourmet Italian sandwiches on fresh focaccia that locals swear are unmatched in San Diego, paired with espresso-focused coffee that keeps people coming back despite the occasional service hiccup. The premium toppings and quality ingredients shine through, though the casual grab-and-go setup means you're trading ambiance for authenticity and genuinely excellent food.

It's legitimately a gourmet sandwich, with very premium toppings. The fresh focaccia is a rare treat. But I cannot give 5 stars, as everything was too oily and they lack any vegan protein offerings. (Mozzarella available for cheese eaters.) This is just a sandwich stand, you eat at outdoor tables in front of an office building. I was there early and they were very fast. Ignore the printed menu prices, as my $12.50 sandwich was actually just under $17.

I gave 3 stars for atmosphere only because it is a counter service not a diner but I love their coffee and the sandwich. It's fresh.

Stopped into Lucca Italian Sandwich Shop for a quick lunch and found it to be a solid little spot in the Columbia District. It’s tucked away outside a high-rise office building with window ordering and a few tables in the building’s foyer for limited seating. Definitely geared toward the weekday business crowd, but it works well for a grab-and-go meal. I went with the Roma sandwich, which came on crisp focaccia bread. The bread was fresh, flavorful, and had a really nice texture that stood out. The rest of the ingredients were fresh too, though I felt like something was just a little short of perfect — maybe a bit more prosciutto would have rounded it out better. Overall, it was very good, and I’d absolutely recommend trying it. For the price point, I would’ve liked a touch more substance, but it’s still a quality lunch option. Not really a destination spot, but it fits its purpose well and definitely delivers for the Monday-through-Friday crowd.

Sandwich was incredible. Ambience is so-so. It’s just a sandwich counter next to an office building. Service was slow. I pre-ordered and my sandwich was 30 minutes later than the app stated. From order to pick up was approx 45 min. I definitely had to scarf my lunch and rush back to work and was late for a meeting. My recommendation to patrons is to pre-order 1 hour before you need it. My recommendation to the restaurant is to invest in an additional set of hands during the lunch rush and also a second toaster.

You won't find another sandwich this good in San Diego, I promise. Lucca, we LOVE YOU!!!!! We have been eyeing this spot for months but unfortunately haven't been able to make it due to the early hours and work schedules. Today we had some free to make it happen, and we were blown away. The ingredients were so so fresh and flavorful. I was extremely excited to hear that the pesto they use is tree-nut free. We both enjoyed the Roma, an absolutely huge sandwich. A really nice outdoor space with seating, umbrellas, and views of the city. We can't wait to come back!!!
