Crema's Take

Three Ships Coffee Roasters stands out as a genuine coffee-focused destination where knowledgeable baristas bring real passion to their craft, elevating the experience far beyond typical chain coffee. Their espresso and pour-over offerings showcase intentional roasting choices with bold, character-driven blends that impress even seasoned coffee drinkers, though their limited daily selection suggests a commitment to quality over quantity. It's a lovely, unpretentious spot that rewards visitors with thoughtful hospitality—including the kind gestures like complimentary honey—and an atmosphere designed for lingering rather than rushing through.

I had a very strange experience at this location today. I ordered a beverage and asked if honey could be added. The employee informed me that they had honey, but they were not allowed to charge for it because they just had a meeting about honey?? When I asked why, he said they didn’t have a button to charge for honey in the register and therefore could not add it. Another customer nearby was equally confused, especially since this is a very normal request at most coffee shops. We politely asked if he could check with a manager, but he refused and said they had recently had a meeting where staff were told not to serve honey. The confusing part was that the manager appeared to be nearby, yet the employee seemed very hesitant and almost nervous to ask. What made this even more puzzling is that I had the exact same beverage with honey at the Norfolk location with no issue at all. As someone who owns a small business myself, I understand policies and operational procedures, but customer service and reasonable accommodations should still come first…especially for something as simple as adding honey to a drink when it is clearly available. Overall, the interaction felt uncomfortable and the vibe at this location was a bit off. I hope management can clarify their policies and empower staff to communicate better with customers moving forward. If they didn’t have honey in stock, that would have been a better explanation. We asked for him to up charge the drink (pay extra money to the business) for honey. Confusing but hope they clarify the confusion.

Lovely place. Coffee made my eyes widen because it was pretty tasty- as someone who is used to Starbucks for better or for worse, it blew me out of the water. I think i got a mocha cappuccino (at other cafes i get white chocolate mochas, but I believe they didn't have it there so they suggested normal mocha iirc). It was more expensive than I'm used to but I kind of didn't mind that due to how it tasted and how relaxing it was in the building. Also, the person who took my order was real kind and fun to talk to. 👏

I really enjoyed the coffee here. I went to other local coffee shops around town, but this one was the standout. There was a wonderful barista with so much knowledge and passion about the coffee she was making that I ended up bringing more people. It was voted the best coffee place on our trip. If this shop was located at my city, I’d be a daily customer. Can’t wait to try the beans I also purchased.

I was really disappointed with my recent visit. This place has gone significantly downhill since I was here last year. Previously, the biscuit sandwich was excellent—crispy, fresh bacon, a perfectly cooked egg, and a fluffy, flavorful biscuit. This time, unfortunately, everything felt subpar and not worth the $50 I spent when bringing my family w/ me from out of town. The bacon and egg both tasted like they’d been microwaved and not good quality, and the biscuit was undercooked and had a strange texture. It honestly reminded me of a frozen breakfast sandwich. I still love the atmosphere and the decor—they’ve created a great space, the coffee was great too—but that only goes so far when the food quality has dropped this much. I would suggest dropping the food from the menu or go back to the original quality I had last year. Not sure if the cook or vendor changed or simply price cuts.

Cute spot. The available coffees were limited to one ready and one pour over. Both coffee blends available on offer seemed to be strong flavors. I was hoping to try more of a house medium blend so I could see if we wanted to buy some grounds as well and was disappointed with what was available so I opted for a chai. My husband got a vanilla latte. It tasted horrible. The chai tasted like it was a powder blend. It had a bitter chalky flavor. The service was slow and not very pleasant especially when I went back to ask for a drink remade because it tasted bad. We try to support local whenever possible but I wouldn't recommend this cafe.
