Crema's Take
“Nestled in Salt Lake City's Avenues neighborhood, this spot shines as a genuinely welcoming gathering place where attentive staff like Jess and Caroline make you feel like a regular from your first visit. The kitchen delivers on both traditional and creative coffee drinks alongside surprisingly solid food, making it equally suited for a quiet solo work session, an intimate date, or a leisurely afternoon lunch that stretches into evening.”

I enjoyed my experience at Avenues Proper. The food and service was good. I was there at an office time, so me and the person I was with were the only ones there. That's the way I like it. I'd definitely recommend going.
Jess greeted me at the door. She was upbeat and lively. I enjoyed personality. She sat me at my table and sent my waiter over to take my drink order. Once my date arrived we had ordered the Kung po cauliflower and the squash sandwich. Both were delicious and something id never had before. Jess came back to check in on us and was just as nice and funny the second time. I enjoyed my time there and will be back.
Overall, I love the Avenues Proper. It is one of the gems of the avenues. It’s a great place for an afternoon lunch and drink or a cozy dinner. I have noticed over the years, the pass-through rate of its servers and receptionists. I think this is indicative of all the struggles that restaurants have in finding and keeping good staff. But with that said, this place is notorious, at least for me, who frequents it often, for making you wait forever at their empty receptionists desk—wait for somebody, anybody! to seat you. Today, for example, my wife and I stood there for nearly 10 minutes before we finally left. If this were the only time, I wouldn’t be writing this, but this has happened to me now at least the past four times I’ve gone there. If you are on a tight schedule, you might want to think about going someplace else. That is what we had to do today, which was unfortunate.
Stopped here on a whim and so glad we did. We got here just as they opened so it wasn't crowded at all, and service was fast and friendly, thank you Caroline V! Coffee was hot and good. The proper burger was excellent, and the fries were very good. The chicken and waffles were so good, the sausage came as breaded fried patties, the fresh ground cumin flavor really came through, and the waffles were fluffy and perfect. There's street parking and a parking lot. There are dining options inside and outside. We sat inside and enjoyed the chill mood music. There's a large beer selection that we're looking forward to sampling next time we come here. 10/10 recommend!
The food was amazing. It was the host and waitress that made this review not a five star. The guy that sat us acted surprised to see us and when we said we had reservations he said “of course you do” He sat us in the bar where we waited 15 mins for our waitress to come. She was in the kitchen having a detailed conversation about her night the night before. We could hear her laughing and talking to the other waitress. We ordered the Fish Tacos, Hot Wings, lobster Mac and cheese, and the proper burger with fancy fries. Everything was amazing especially the burger. I ordered medium and would say it was rare but still delicious we also had the dessert which was ok.
