Crema's Take

Skip the chain cafes and head to Ellē for cakes that locals genuinely rave about—the sponge is impossibly light and the buttercreams and ganache strike that rare balance between elegant and indulgent. The whole operation feels effortless in the best way: fresh-baked baguettes, inventive takes on breakfast classics, and a cozy vibe that doesn't announce itself, plus genuinely friendly staff who make you want to linger over your coffee. This is the kind of neighborhood spot that becomes a weekend ritual once you discover it.

What to expect

I walk up from Dupont Circle just to enjoy this lovely café. The food in the restaurant (and in the bakery) is high-quality. They even have some of the best baguettes in town. If you want to have breakfast with a friend, try to meet them here! It has a very cool vibe.

Excellent food and great service! Each dish was well balanced and many interesting takes on classic dishes! Of course you have to get the bread since they bake it fresh there!

When Elle opened in 2018, it became an immediate favorite for me and my wife. It wasn't long before our weekend ritual was going to the Mt. Pleasant farmers market, getting biscuits from Elle, and going back to our apartment for a veggie scramble with some (warmed in the oven)…
