Crema's Take

Recess Coffee Downtown has earned a loyal following in Syracuse for its smooth matcha and creative espresso drinks like their standout PB Mocha, served by genuinely warm baristas in a spacious, work-friendly setting that won't break the bank. The quality and consistency can be hit-or-miss depending on who's behind the bar and how busy they are, but when they get it right, regulars and visitors alike find themselves impressed enough to remember the experience fondly. It's the kind of indie spot that feels like a genuine neighborhood gathering place rather than a polished chain.

Quick and pleasant service, nice quality coffee and matcha. Decent amount of seating and clean bathrooms, great place to go to catchup on some work. On the inexpensive side when it comes to coffee shops these days. Matcha Latte - 5/5. Better than your average matcha at an espresso and coffee focused shop. Perfect temperature and no sugar added, which for me that makes this drink great. Nice flavor on the matcha they use and milk was frothed perfectly. For $5 for 12oz, definitely worth it. Light roast coffee with almond milk - 5/5. Nice flavor on the coffee itself, no sugar added. Definitely brewed at a higher quality than other coffee shops. For only $2.75, this 16oz coffee is a win in my book.

I had an amazinggggg PB Mocha here and my girlfriend got a matcha which was super smooth as well, we are visiting from NYC and this is the best PB Mocha I’ve ever had! Darren our barista was so sweet too, he upgraded our matcha to 16 oz on the house!! Definitely coming back next time!!!

I thought the running man was supposed to be a grilled cheese sandwich. Why is this cheese cold? I saw her make it. It was like she toasted the bread and slid some cheese in it. Not worth the money. It's been a while since I visited a Recess. But if this is the regular service, I'm not interested.

You could tell the staff was overwhelmed and stressed but you gotta keep your composure. I cooked for 10 years . I know pressure, as result of that stress I got sorry looking bagel where they threw the cream cheese on there didn't even try to distribute it evenly. You gotta make a better effort then that . You can tell they did because when I opened it I had smear the two slices together before I spread the cream cheese. Just wasn't a very good effort and that one lady her additude seemed short and dismissive. I didn't even want to go back up and bring it to there attention at that point to start a argument. It's a shame I live downtown and grab coffee at couple different places. This could have been my everyday 7 days week spot.

A great spot, however the coffee can be inconsistent sometimes. Sometimes my latte prices are different even though I order the same thing. I suggest being specific about the amount of syrup you want to prevent overly sweet drinks also, I tend to get 2 flavors and if I don't specify the coffee is grossly sweet. I enjoy the location and the interior. Be prepared to spend money, two items can reach 20 dollars by adding substitutes like almond milk. The staff is great and friendly and will help you with any questions you have.
