Tin Roof Teas

Crema's Take
“Tin Roof Teas is a beloved tea destination in Raleigh with a beautifully curated aesthetic—think walls lined with tea boxes and artfully arranged teapots—that makes choosing your next brew feel like an experience rather than a transaction. While service can be inconsistent, the shop shines when you connect with knowledgeable staff who genuinely help you explore their specialty selections, from traditional loose-leaf teas to matcha and creative specialty drinks. It's the kind of place where regulars keep coming back year after year, making it a reliable spot for both serious tea lovers and anyone seeking a thoughtful, laptop-friendly atmosphere.”

Ahhh. This one makes me sad. I had never been to Tin Roof Teas and have been soooo excited to finally come and ready to purchase many items! Me and my friend walk in and there were 2 employees (lady and man). The man was with a customer, however, the other employee was not. No one greeted us at all. So, we decided to explore on our own to try to figure out their offerings. Then, I believe the owner or manager walks out from the back. I said to myself, surely, he's going to greet us..... nothing. He went on telling the lady employee how she needed to do something and continued to restock his shelves. I'd say it was a total of 12 minutes that went by and I decided to walk over to the "honey bar". This is where it gets worse, the lady continued to stand near the register talking with the owner or manager, it almost felt like an intentional refusal of acknowledgement. The other employee was fully available but he didn't ask did we need help either. I walked to the lady after realizing that neither of them were going to come over to the honey bar and ask if we needed anything. I began to ask (in a kind manner) about their shop and she said "I mean, what are you looking for? this area is to warm honey". I then went on to just simply ask about their different tea's and she pointed to where we needed to go and simply answered our questions. There was no initiative to talk about the experiences that they offer or the variety of teas and honey that they sold. I left very disappointed and no purchases. The stars go towards their products bc I did enjoy the fact that they had such a cool variety of teas.
I came here because the social media videos made the staff look incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable, but the reality was the exact opposite. I walked the entire store without a single greeting or offer of help. When I finally approached the cashier for a recommendation, she acted like answering was a chore. I decided not to spend a dime in this establishment but the person I was with did, due to the long drive to get there. It’s disappointing to see such a massive gap between their online persona and the actual customer service.
I first went to Tin Roof Teas in 2016 while I was a grad student. In all the years and other cities I’ve lived in, I’ve never found a tea shop I like better so I order all my tea from here. Love trying all different varieties, they’re so great!
I just visited a couple of weeks ago for the first time and loved the atmosphere, tea and customer service. The gentleman behind the counter was very knowledgeable and helpful. They helped me curate a very nice cup of tea. Unfortunately yesterday when I visited I realized that your experience is determined by who is assisting you. I tried to make the same tea and was told that I couldn’t because of different “tea temperatures” then followed by a condescending attitude when I asked what else they could recommend. It just turned me off and I just rushed my order. I’ll be back but will be avoiding that young lady behind the counter
If you're paying a little extra for tea you want the tea shop to have a little extra "something". Tin Roof Teas has that -- immaculate arrangement of teapots to the wall of tea boxes in a narrow store (harkening to an old world tea trader feel). There's a tea bar in the back, and friendly (if often busy) staff to help you, but best of all there are sample containers so you can get the aroma of many of the teas they have on offer. Herbal, mixed blends, decaf, straight up black and Oolong teas, this place has more than enough variety to keep you exploring for more. I've never left this place unhappy (I have, however, left this place with more gifts for tea drinkers than I intended to buy :D ).
