Crema's Take

Bleu Coffee is a Jamaican-owned gem tucked into a West Orange plaza where the knowledgeable staff (like the memorable Renee) remember regulars' orders and genuinely enjoy their work. Beyond their espresso-focused drinks and seasonal specials like the beloved Coquito Latte, their flaky, buttery croissants and matcha are worth the hunt, and the two-floor space strikes that perfect balance of being artful and intimate yet spacious enough for a long sit with your laptop.

I’ve been coming here for a little under a year after moving to the area. I’ve been recommending this place to friends and associates, also letting them know it is Jamaican-owned (main motivator of my support). I placed an order for a hot matcha with oat milk at 4:06pm. After picking up the drink and tasting it, I walked back in to let her know it wasn’t hot. She reheated it and I waited patiently, I wasn’t even annoyed. After receiving my drink the 2nd time I left immediately. I trusted without checking. It was the exact temperature as I had given it to her. I went back in, still not annoyed and explained the drink wasn’t hot. She insisted it was and placed her palms on either side of the cup to “prove”. I explained while she is touching the cup, I actually tasted the drink. She is telling me if the drink were any hotter the oat milk would burn (which is obviously not the case because the drink was not even hot). I told her I’m not interested in an argument I only want the drink to be made hot like I ordered. She told me that she’s not making my drink until she makes all the other drinks. While waiting I told her once she’s done making the other drinks she can process a refund instead. She wanted to argue again and tell me she was making my drink already. I had to reiterate that I asked for a refund. My issue is the unnecessary argumentative and condescending nature of how she spoke to me, the spitefulness in making me wait, and ultimately ignoring my requests not once but three times. Instead of providing quality service, she went all the way to the other end of the spectrum. She never asked me if it was hot enough, she never recommended a different milk that she felt more comfortable heating, she never apologized or expressed understanding of how frustrating it might be for me to come back once or even twice. I am extremely disappointed in her behavior and she needs to be re-trained. Maybe even therapy to not take a customer’s temperature preference as a personal attack so she is not so reactive to simple requests. *This was the heavyset white woman with a buzz cut. I had never seen her there before.

So happy to have found Bleu Coffee. The coffee is great, the pastries look amazing (I still have to try them) and there’s plenty of seating on 2 floors. It feels young and artful and the staff are great. It’s a perfect place to hang out or get some work done. They had a live music band on the day we were there. I can see how this place can quickly become a neighborhood staple if it’s not already. The only thing I’d change is the lighting on the second floor as the white lights feel too cool and bright compared to the rest of the space.

Tucked away in the plaza making it a bit difficult to find is this gem and Renee! She is knowledgeable, patient and obviously enjoys her job. She recalled a customer’s order as soon as he got in line. Now that is service and with a huge smile! The shop is two levels and even has a piano! There is plenty of room and seating for people to sit and work or friends to come and chat. While we were the only ones in the shop for a while she explained that the owner grows and sells beans raised in Jamaica. She started a pot of fresh brewed single origin medium roast Honduran coffee when I asked for drip, explaining they don’t start the drip coffee until someone orders it so it’s hot and fresh! Great idea! It is a great choice too. She scored extra points when my card declined and I had issues with my Apple Pay. It just wasn’t my morning. She was patient, never rushing me and helped me get it settled. I will definitely be back ( with cash lol)

This place is a true hidden gem. This cafe is super cute and has lots of seating. The hazelnut croissant was flaky and just the right amount of sweet. The matcha was lovely. The staff was friendly. Check this place out!
