FireFly Coffee House

1700 Commercial Wy, Santa Cruz, CA

★★★★4.3(181 Google reviews)

Crema's Take

This Santa Cruz spot excels at quick, satisfying breakfast sandwiches and bagels (the Kitchen Sink is a local favorite), though the coffee itself is a solid but not standout companion to your meal. The intimate, seating-limited space works best for a grab-and-go visit on a busy morning, though loyal neighbors appreciate the friendly vibe when you catch them on a good day. If you're planning to linger, ordering ahead and taking your everything bagel to a nearby park is the move.

I thought it was great. After reading some reviews, I must have gotten lucky on this fun rainy day because my wait was very minimal. My scramble was tasty, coffee good, and the service was friendly. Definitely not a sit and eat place, but worth it for a togo order. The salsa is delicious, ask for it. Will definitely be back to try more.

I cannot believe how poorly I was treated during my visit today and the complete lack of customer service I experienced. I live right down the street and have been coming to this coffee shop for a long time, but there seems to be new staff, and unfortunately the experience was awful. One employee with black hair refused to let me speak with a manager and refused to properly remake my drink. I ordered my drink extra extra hot with no foam. It came out with a lot of foam, so I brought it back. The remake was then lukewarm. I even went as far as to apologize and say, “I’m so sorry, but I’m just not enjoying this drink. Could I please have it remade?” I was calm, respectful, and polite. The only thing she offered me was that I could buy another drink. When I asked if I could switch to something completely different instead, I was told I would still have to pay for a new drink and keep the incorrect one. I even expressed that I would not be returning to this location because of this experience, and she literally shrugged her shoulders and said, “Okay, fine.” I have never experienced customer service like this. If a drink is made incorrectly, it should be remade properly or another staff member should step in. Customers should not be expected to pay again for mistakes that are not their fault. For reference, this occurred at approximately 10:30 AM on February 3rd at the Commercial Way location. If management is wondering which employee needs to be spoken to or retrained, it was the staff member with black hair working at that time. I am a neighbor of this business. I am also a business owner and work in customer service myself, and I would never treat someone this way. I personally would not want someone like this representing my business. I will not be returning, and I will not be recommending this shop to anyone. I strongly suggest management reconsider staff training and emphasize what real customer service looks like.

I would suggest ordering ahead of time, and planning on taking it to go. Seating is limited, with three small tables and one bench. If you are looking for a sit down restaurant this does not fit the bill. The food is delicious and plentiful, but it is slow to come out. This is likely due to a few factors: fairly constant stream of patrons, there being one cook and a desire for quality food and ingredients. Set expectations and enjoy.

Great breakfast sandwich! ($11) I ordered the breakfast bagel on an everything bagel. The bagel was toasted which gave it a nice crunch while maintaining a soft interior. The egg had green onions which I appreciated. Simple and delicious! Only downside for me is that they use egg from a bag. If you are okay with that, you’ll love it!

Amazing bagels and breakfast sandwiches. I don’t think you can go wrong with any selection but the Kitchen Sink always hits the spot. Coffee is okay, and there’s very few seats if you plan to dine-in, but it’s worth visiting this cafe for a bagel or breakfast sandwich.
