Crema's Take

Empire Coffee & Tea Company has genuine warmth that matches their craft—regulars rave about the supportive community vibe and baristas who genuinely make their day, while the shop itself smells like a Moroccan spice market thanks to sacks of fresh-roasted beans lining the walls. They excel at both coffee fundamentals (excellent drip and espresso) and thoughtful creativity, whether that's their celebrated gluten-free muffins, a perfectly balanced sweet matcha with caramel or pistachio, or carefully sourced tea selections, all without breaking the bank.

They have the BEST gluten free muffins. So soft and fluffy. They make a great sweet matcha too. I occasionally like to add caramel or pistachio flavoring to it. Also love to buy a box of Harney & Sons green tea packets from here.

Empire Coffee & Tea Company – Hoboken I’ve been going to Empire Coffee for a minute now, and I swear this place has its claws in me in the best way. It’s one of those spots you wander into once and suddenly you’re like, “Wow, guess I’m a regular now.” And honestly? Proud of it. I’ve basically worked my way through half their menu at this point—hot, iced, seasonal. I recently decided I’m entering my Black Coffee Era (character development), and their black coffee actually tastes like… coffee. Not burnt water. Not overpriced bitterness. Just genuinely good, rich brew for like two bucks. The vibe inside is exactly the kind of chill I need before I attempt being a functional human. The staff is young, friendly, and has that effortless cool energy that makes you feel welcome without being weird about it. Very much “we’re all in this caffeine struggle together.” Love that. One of my favorite things: they sell beans. Like actual, honest-to-goodness coffee beans you can buy whole or ask them to grind for you. Tons of varieties, all reasonably priced. I just grabbed a bag and I’m embarrassingly excited to use my new coffee maker at home like some kind of domestic caffeine goddess. And the little extras? Chef’s kiss. They’ve got treats, pastries, fun little gifts you can grab last-minute when you suddenly remember you’re supposed to bring something to someone’s house. I’ve tried a few pastries—pretty sure they’re fresh because they taste fresh—and the blueberry one (muffin? scone? I was too busy inhaling it to remember) was fire. The kids love the chocolate-covered pretzels like it’s a sport. Empire Coffee just hits every time. It’s cozy, affordable, consistent, and the kind of place you accidentally attach your personality to. Highly recommend falling into this habit.

The most community focused and supportive cafe in Hoboken. Great coffee that you don’t need to mortgage your apartment to afford. Wonderful service (the redhead barista absolutely makes my day!). During Covid and the political fallouts, they never changed their prices, service or got into silliness that prevents them from over-delivering a good product with a supportive smile!

Stumbled upon this cute coffee shop and immediately noticed the long but fast moving line which is a good sign! They're a true one stop shop for coffee lovers, offering great service, delicious hot latte, and a plethora of bean options for home brewing. I loved that they have a machine to grind the beans right there, plus they sell various card games, tea, and coffee appliances. The cost is also very reasonable. The Downside: I was disappointed they don't make cold brew. My iced coffee had a slight French vanilla or sweet note which isn't to my personal taste, but overall, they are definitely worth checking out for the quality beans and unique selection!

Sacks of roasted coffee beans lined in rows like a market in Marrakech, the smell makes my mornings. You need to ask them to scoop them for you. Really great drip coffee - I usually get a decaf with cream. The lattes are good as well, though I avoid the flavoured coffee as they contain way too much sweetener for my taste. If you are in the neighbourhood ask for a punchcard towards a free coffee... they won't necessarily ask if you want one.
