Crema's Take

This Kalamazoo institution pairs genuinely excellent bagels—fresh, generously sized, and topped with quality cream cheese—with thoughtfully crafted coffee drinks that go beyond the usual suspects, from vibrant real fruit smoothies to creative seasonal mochas. The efficient kiosk-to-counter service keeps the line moving for the breakfast rush crowd, while the welcoming, family-friendly vibe and solid sandwich execution make it a reliable stop that locals actually prefer over competing locations in the region.

I love this Bagel Beanery. Far better than the ones in Grand Rapids that I've been to. They always make my sandwich just right and the coffee is decent. I stop by and grab breakfast a couple times a week here. The service is fast and it's the same people working there all the time every day so I know they must work really hard. Which is why what happened today is so frustrating. Being in the Vine neighborhood, or in Kalamazoo in general, you are going to interact with homeless folks. It's a given. Sometimes these folks solicit outside of the shops on that block. I suppose that is going to happen when people are struggling so much. It is an especially difficult time in this country and we should try to look out for each other. I was approached by a man as I was leaving today and he wondered if I had some money so he could by some food. I said I don't have any cash but I'd be happy to buy him something. So we entered the store and he said hi to one of the women working there. Before I could even approach an order kiosk she said that we had to leave. She said that he solicits often from customers outside and there have been complaints. Well I can't help that but what I can do is help feed this guy. I told her I wanted to buy some food for him with my money. She again refused. I made an appeal. I said that this man is our neighbor. People are struggling everywhere right now and we should try to help them. She said she understands that but again refused and said that I could not order food for him. This man was respectful and calm and did not even show anger or frustration at this. I understand that it is not desirable for a business to have people begging for money outside their doors. But is my money no longer good if it's going to help feed someone in need? You might say, "Oh he can just go to a food bank." Perhaps. But he needs transportation. He has to be hungry and wait in a long line. I will never understand how business owners or employees can be so cold. As a business you are a part of a community. And even homeless folks are valued members of our community here. Instead of refusing service I can think of better options. The easiest one: let charitable customers buy a meal for someone struggling. Another idea: start a "pay it forward" system where people can essentially donate money to the restaurant that can be used by people who don't have enough to eat. That way they wouldn't have to beg people outside. It is just so disappointing. I don't think this employee was a bad person, just trying to protect the business they work so hard to maintain. But please, have some heart for those who are worse off.

This wasn't our first stop today. Had a weird experience somewhere else, and I knew where you were located. I used to go to Kleins bagels in your building back 20+years ago, so I thought of you! I'm so glad we stopped in! Nice service, good bagels! The price was significantly less than Big Apple. We went to Big Apple and they didn't have any bagels. They had a couple, and that was it. And the server was such a brat. No sense of urgency. It was weird! So we made a special trip :) and your workers were working hard

Grab some breakfast and lunch before work so I stopped by here. I was very early so I was the only customer. Service was very fast. You ordered on the kiosk and then she will call your name out 10 mins later. There is no option to toast the bagel Bagel shop also a Asian snack store. There are tons of Asian branded drinks and snacks on the shelf. Very interesting blend of products. This is not your regular mom n pop bagel shop for sure, not much interaction with the owner/cashier. Bagel sandwich is pretty good. Price is decent and they open very early. 6am

awesome coffee choices and great breakfast sandwich options! We had the Denver omelette sandwich, ice marbled mocha, Arizona omelette sandwich, and a hot peppermint mocha. Fast and friendly staff and fresh food. Will definitely recommend as a refreshing change over major chains
