Crema's Take
“Simple Joe Cafe is a beloved Baton Rouge institution with the classic diner energy of an old-school counter-service spot where locals line up for hearty breakfasts and juicy burgers. The walls are decorated with nice artwork, and despite the perpetual crowd and limited seating, the staff keeps the vibe warm and welcoming while maintaining the friendly chaos that makes it feel like a genuine neighborhood gathering place. It's the kind of place where you grab a seat at the counter or find a table as soon as one clears, fuel up on a solid breakfast, and feel like you're part of something real.”

Pulled up to Simple Joe’s for a bite on the go, Baton Rouge morning, let the people know. Place was poppin’, yeah it stays real busy, Not a lot of seats, but the vibe ain’t iffy. Ordered the biscuit — eggs, sausage, cheese, That biscuit was soft, like it melted with ease. Cheese sunk down, sausage locked tight, All blended together — yeah, that bite was right. Pancake showed up, kept it real and plain, Flavor was okay, but it missed that gain. Little underdone, kinda doughy inside, Not that fluffy cloud you want on your side. Drip coffee poured, kept it simple and fair, Not blowing your mind, but it’s solid there. Overall spot? Simple, quick, no frills, Good for a stop when you’re running on will. 👉 Biscuit sandwich: certified win 👉 Pancake: decent, but room to improve 👉 Coffee: average, gets the job done That’s the word from the morning crew — Quick bite review, and yeah… we’re through. 🎤☕🥞
Nice art work was displayed on the walls. Burgers were juicy and the omelet was alright. The staff was friendly to us when we asked questions about things worked - where’s the water? Do we get chips with this? They were hanging up on the side of the counter. We enjoyed it and would go back.
Simple Joe is an old school diner feel. This environment is a Baton Rouge staple. Everything was flawless in our experience other than ordering - the individual taking our order looked absolutely thrilled to be working. We enjoyed the ambience, the chefs were absolutely classic and super friendly. Definitely either get a pancake or French toast to go with your breakfast. I ordered the Salmon omelette with bacon and toast. The pancakes were the hit, so fluffy and did not weigh on your stomach. Hashbrowns were old school southern and traditional along with the sausage biscuits and gravy. Give it a shot for a classic Americana breakfast in a delightful hole in the wall. 🥓 🥞
When we left The Queen, it’s was 7:30AM. We were both hungry for breakfast, but not interested in Waffle House, so I did a quik search of the area and opted for the Simple Joe Cafe. They have a self-serving counter, where you stand in line, give your order, pay, get a number for your table, fix your drink, and find a place to sit. They weren’t extremely busy so we got a table with no problem. I loved the energy in this place. It felt very friendly and had a close-nit neighborhood vibe. I can tell they have a lot of regulars. The only things I can really complain about are 1. It was pricier than what I expected, but everything is nowadays. 2. The young gentleman who rang us up seemed a little rude and I really didn’t care for his attitude. He didn’t say anything wrong, he just didn’t make us feel welcomed. He definitely didn’t match the vibe in this place because he wasn’t friendly at all. Compared to the rest of the experience, he stuck out like a sore thumb. As for the food, I got the two egg scrambled breakfast with grits, bacon, and French toast. The eggs and grits were amazing but I didn’t care for the French toast at all!! This is the first time I’ve had grits at a restaurant that makes them the same as I do, using milk and real butter. They were cooked to perfection…they were soooo good! We both agreed to stop here again the next time we’re in the area. Though I’d usually give 3 stars, especially bc of the unwelcoming attitude I received, everything else made up for that so I added an extra one.
This place is very popular with the locals which is exactly what you want in a good breakfast place. Its counter serve and there is a healthy line. It seemed like tables cleared as new people checked out though so there was a place to sit if you wanted it. I had the biscuits and gravy which were fantastic. I also got a croissant breakfast sandwich. I ended up saving that and reheating the next morning. It was very good too!
