PennyCup at the YMI
39 S Market St, Asheville, NC
Crema's Take
“Nestled in the YMI cultural center, PennyCup offers genuinely adventurous coffee selections like honeycomb and lavender lattes that reward curiosity, paired with a thoughtfully curated bookshelf and warm hospitality from a knowledgeable team. The space captures that coveted local coffee shop feeling without the corporate polish, though consistency seems to depend on which barista is behind the bar—when the team is on, it's a destination worth the visit.”

This place has the most wretched staff of all time - it's physically uncomfortable to be in there. It's cute inside and the coffee is fine so I've given it a few tries but never again. Wild to be so rude when you work in a tips based industry. French Broad Chocolate is around the corner and has super friendly baristas - clean and spacious, go there instead. Best of luck!
My wife and I came here twice during our short trip to Asheville and this place has all the coffee vibes! A small collection of books in the back, a great collection of coffee. Honestly a good place to sit back and relax and take a load off while you stay warm! Very enjoyable atmosphere!
Love the customer service and the support received as recommended by the Penny Cup team. First day was Honeycomb and day 2 was the lavender coffee, take out. I was initially skeptical but I remained open to the experience and it did not disappoint.
great atmosphere, nice shop, got a ymi iced latte it was mediocre for $7. but the real kicker is the barista finishing the drink and not calling out a name or the order or saying anything, just putting it on the counter and leaving it as she sees us sitting on the other side of the room, after 10 minutes of us looking up to see if she’s finished she just says your order is ready and we said oh we didn’t know how long has it been ready and she said a hot minute rudely, and then she proceeds to leave the store as we are sitting in there with seemingly no one else in there, there might have been but we wouldn’t know it’s empty, but yeah not a bad store but definitely didn’t have a good experience
Nice local chain without the chain feeling. The breakfast sandwich was fantastic. The espresso is good. I had a cortado, really focusing on the espresso and bitterness. Not as much complexity as I’d like but still good. The cappuccino was appropriately dry although the espresso didn’t take center stage. The atmosphere is great and the baristas knew what they were doing.
