Crema's Take

Wagner's European Bakery & Cafe feels like a beloved neighborhood institution where you can grab a warming Mexican mocha and pastries on your way to the Capitol, or settle in for a leisurely lunch date with homemade soup and their famous cinnamon bread. The café nails that sweet spot between old-world European charm and no-fuss American comfort, with a European breakfast spread and made-to-order baked goods that keep longtime customers coming back. Whether you're stopping by the drive-thru or lingering over a hot oatmeal latte, there's a genuine warmth here that makes Tumwater feel like home.

Closest open coffee Cafe to the Capitol. They have a nice warm Mexican mocha and very hot oatmeal lattes.

I had such a nice lunch date experience here. My sandwich and soup were delicious, and the option for a homemade “treat” was truly so lovely. The service was fantastic and I really enjoyed the atmosphere. Very close walk to the Capitol. I will be back!

Classic Olympia. A must stop for a bite and you have to take home box of pastries and a loaf of their amazing cinnamon bread. Long time customer. I stop in Olympia on my way between Portland and Seattle whenever possible. Try the little rhubarb tarts. They're amazing.

When ordering custom baked goods, be sure to print out or have the staff member taking the order write it down formally with a date and signature! We were shown the largest cake size in person (see photo with hand for scale) and quoted $62 each. Ok, great. We put in an order for two of that size. When we arrived for pick up, they were much larger than what we were shown in person and rung up at twice the cost ($125 ea). The cakes were for my father's memorial. I paid a total of $308 for two 1/2 sheet cakes which were way more than what we needed. We took an untouched cake home. Decorating charges were separate at $15.75. When we told staff there had been a miscommunication, they said they would talk to the manager and staff member who took our order but did nothing to correct the mistake. They did not offer us a discount for their mistake. I understand that the cost and time of making bigger cakes means a higher price point, but to expect your client to pay more than double what they budgeted for with no offer to help us is a bit ridiculous, especially during a less than fortunate time in our lives. The cake tasted okay - the frosting may be sweeter than most people are used to. I would encourage Wagner's staff to train newer or younger staff members to be EXPLICITLY CLEAR on what they offer and what the price is because we were a bit blown away by the misquoted proportion of cake and price for what we received.

This cafe has an old world artisanal charm combined with the rustic American passion for a quick meal. Perfect in its settings or the city that Olympia is! Great choice of European breakfast as well as afternoon brunch fare.
