Pink Box Bakery Cafe
2104 Murray Ave, Pittsburgh, PA
Crema's Take
“Pink Box Bakery Cafe is a neighborhood Asian bakery that's earned a devoted following for its exceptionally soft, fresh custard buns and pastries—a refreshing contrast to the stale offerings you'd find at most Pittsburgh supermarkets. The owners are genuinely warm and welcoming, creating an unpretentious spot that's equally suited to a quick grab-and-go pastry run or lingering over coffee and baked goods with friends. It's a small, takeaway-focused gem where the quality of the buns themselves seems to inspire customers to come back for seconds (literally, according to a few reviews).”

Some of the softest and most delicious buns I have had on the east coast! A far cry from the stale imitations at asian supermarkets around Pittsburgh. My favorite is the custard bun but it’s almost always nearly sold out. The bread melts in your mouth it’s so soft. I always like experimenting with the interesting flavors and combinations the very nice owner/baker comes up with.
Absolutely amazing bakery! The owners were so nice! The custard buns were delicious! We shared one in the car then immediately went back inside and bought two more!
The almond pastry was dry and chewy. Very bland even for me. I can eat less sugary things but it was nothing to write home about. She was super aggressive when I first walked in. Even when I told her the marcoons were bad and we didn't enjoy the vanilla one. She continued to sell us how good everyone loved them. I think out of towners and uncultured people may enjoy.
This is a takeaway only place. I wanted some desert and found this in the neighbourhood. They have a good selection of pastries as well as bake goods. Very similar concept to Tous Les Jours but less fancy. The interiors are a bit dimly lit but it might be an aesthetic choice. I got something which looked like a choux pastry filled with cream but the texture was not choux but a light bread of sorts. It was very good, nevertheless. I also got a light layered pastry and that was good as well.
It's a bit difficult to judge Pink Box, simply because I only tried one item. However, what I can say is that Pink Box seems to be a solid Asian bakery. In fact, it's one of the few Asian bakeries in Pittsburgh. I tried the custard bun (regular vanilla, not chocolate). The price is alright for the bun. Portion wise, it's about the size of my hand, so quite large. The custard filling is creamy and has a slight acidic taste to it, almost like a light hint of lemon. I would have liked a bit more custard, but it's not an empty pastry either. The bread surrounding it is fluffy but relatively flavorless. I expected the pastry bread to be sweetened and it seemed not to be. All in all, some of the items are a little expensive. But, this place is pretty authentic, offers a good variety, and the items are seemingly fairly good quality. I'm definitely glad we have an Asian bakery in Pittsburgh, and I'll occasionally stop by.
