Crema's Take

Baker & Spice is a beloved Hillsdale neighborhood gem that buzzes with genuine energy, especially on weekend mornings, where locals gather for exceptional pastries and sandwiches that clearly justify the devoted following. The real standout here is their commitment to quality across the board—whether you're biting into a buttery everything croissant paired with their best-in-class tuna sandwich or indulging in creative treats like peanut butter miso cookies and coffee ricotta cheesecake, every item feels thoughtfully made. It's the kind of place where the combination of stellar baked goods, satisfying sandwiches, and welcoming atmosphere makes it a destination rather than just a quick coffee stop.

Baker & Spice is a true Hillsdale treasure! 🥐 There is nothing like the energy here on a weekend morning. As a local guide and real estate expert, I always tell people that having a bakery like this within walking distance is what makes a neighborhood feel like home. The seasonal galettes are a must-try!

BEST TUNA SANDWICH OF MY LIFE. on the most perfect everything croissant. We also got the coffee ricotta cheesecake, the peanut butter miso cookie, and the savory raclette, everything was phenomenal !!! only flaw of this experience is the only picture I got is a glitchy digi cam one of my croissant, I also taped this picture in my journal to forever remember

I think I prefer this place over Grand Central. The sandwich that I had the tuna salad I think was superior to Grand Central and a hair cheaper. The pickles that it came with were top notch, as well as the little sugar cookie a nice touch. I look forward to returning and trying many of the pastries. Plus another major pro to this place is there's actually parking!

I don't shop at this bakery often as I live out of state. Here is my experience: Pros: Their sourdough bread was good when I tried a few months ago. Nice atmosphere Good service Cons: A few pastries of theirs I have tried in the past fell short to me. Just didn't taste good to me. Either too greasy, or taste was off. Cranberry Almond scone, recently purchased, fell short for me. Way too dense and too sweet. It would make a decent cookie. Buckwheat and seed scone also fell short. Way too dense and dry, too sweet. Also would make a decent cookie. Scones are supposed to be dense, but not as dense and not as sweet. At least the traditional scones. Lemon poppy seed rugelach was not good. It had a hint of rancidity and bitterness from poppyseeds. Poppy seeds taste bitter when they are either incorrectly processed or improperly stored. Rancidity happens when poppy seeds are old. It's a very specific taste. Tried the bites of Stollen laid out for people to try. It just didn't taste good. Dry, flavorless.

Yikes! Mean is the best way I can describe this experience. I have worked in the hospitality industry so I like to give a little grace, but it was met with eye rolls angry responses and not just by one employee by everyone I encountered. I tipped my dutiful percentage and walked over to the tables that I can best describe as an hint to leave. Can’t imagine an elderly person or a child being able to sit and eat at a table knee height and stools with no back. The sandwich was good, but not worth the abuse. Find a friendly business that wants you there.
