Crema's Take

Good Ambler is a sprawling Fulton Market gem that makes nearly everything in-house, from their reliably good coffee to genuinely exceptional French-style pastries that rival those in France itself—their croissants and kouign amann are standouts worth the trip. The soaring ceilings and chandeliers create an unexpectedly elegant backdrop for casual hangouts or focused study sessions, though weekend seating does get competitive. At just $5.25 for a latte, it's an affordable escape that nails the balance between serious pastry craftsmanship and unpretentious, welcoming atmosphere.

We found Good Ambler on accident on our way to La Colombe and enjoyed it. The coffee and almond coffee cake were fine, but the orange bon bonnets terrific. It’s a huge, really nice interior that I enjoyed sitting at for a little while. It’s part of the Mondelez headquarters, and I found it endearing that the company has a space open to the public like this. The service was a little bit slow in the mid afternoon, but nothing outrageous.

2nd time here. Great shop that makes everything in house! A bit competitive for seating on weekends, so take what you can. Coffee is pretty good, only a latte (sans changes) is only $5.25. Sitting at the bar in the back is a hidden gem for people watching of the bakers.

I visited this cafe for a casual cafe outing with my friend. It was around 8:30am on a Wednesday when we got there. The atmosphere was business casual. The ceiling was high with beautiful chandeliers. Many trinkets in a glass case and plants throughout the cafe. I saw many people having online meetings and some small gatherings, maybe because the cafe is attached to an office building. The line to order was long, but not bad. I ordered their Doubled Chocolate Croissant, Almond Croissant, and banana bread. I was kind of disappointed that you can’t warm up the croissant if it’s not the regular croissant. However, the Doubled Chocolate Croissant was really good. The chocolate breaks off while you take a bite giving you a different type of texture and flavor. Flaky on the outside and buttery without feeling too heavy. I get why some cannot be warmed up in the oven. They should recommend or at least let the customer choose how they want the baked goods. I also ordered an iced matcha latte and iced chai tea. It was underwhelming to say the least; the matcha was watery and the chai tea lacks the spiced flavor I was looking for. Overall the service was friendly and efficient, and pricing felt reasonable for the baked goods, but not the drinks. Maybe I’ll have to try some other ones if I can convince myself to go back. I would recommend this place for a quick bite and people that want to try their bakery selections. It’s perfect for people that WFH is trying to change the environment for the day.

Love this place for a casual hangout or to study! The croissants are some of the best I've had in my life including those in France. My favorites are the chocolates and the ham and cheese. The kougn amann is also AMAZING! MUST TRY! I like their espresso shots as well :) definite must-try in Chicago.

A relative newcomer to the Chicago bakery scene Good Ambler makes good use of its expansive Fulton Market footprint with an in-house Bakery and Chocolatier plus lots of comfy seating. A 16 on Center concept, owners of everything from Salt Shed and Beauty Bar to Longman & Eagle, guests arriving during morning hours can expect a brief wait for Quiche, Wraps or Salads or an array of Viennoiserie. Priced akin to other like-concepts, roughly $4-6 per Pastry and Coffee $3.25 up for standard Drip, Good Ambler’s Kouign Amann is sticky with a good exterior crackle yielding buttery layers while the Almond Croissant is soggy and marred by excessive Frangipane. More impressed by the Financier, a moist crumb supporting Cherry Jam, the Ham & Cheese Croissant proved better than its sibling but instead of being over-filled offered the opposite with a good amount of hardened Cheese visibly leaking from the edges.
