Public Provisions
45 Public Market, Rochester, NY
Crema's Take
“Public Provisions is a bustling counter-service spot tucked inside Rochester's public market where the legendary breakfast sandwich has earned devoted fans who return year after year, dreaming about it between visits. The energy here is genuinely convivial—a mix of early risers, market-goers, and regulars who don't mind the no-frills ordering system because the food and friendly staff more than make up for it. Whether you're grabbing a quick coffee or settling in at the bar for their excellent smash burgers and ambitious breakfast plates, this is the kind of place that feels like a real neighborhood anchor rather than a polished café.”

We went in with no reservation, got lucky cause lots waiting after us. The service was awesome, great recommendations on food and drink. The food was very good. I got the smash burger with a side salad and my husband got the hash bowl. We got a couple of cocktails too. My espresso martini was sweeter than I would prefer but still good and my husbands Bloody Mary was great.
Made a visit Friday morning and were the first ones in there. There’s no table service so you have to keep going up to order and ask for things. They only have one menu that everyone was fighting for. The guy working there is very polite and listened to our mimosa requests (a hint of juice in each). Those were the best things. I came with a family member and she ordered a cappuccino and something the worker suggested which looked like a breakfast plate of some sort. The cappuccino was solid but her plate was basic, nothing special, very salty bacon. The eggs weren’t scrambled as requested but omelet like. The potatoes were the best thing on that plate and I cleaned out their house made hot sauce. It’s not really spicy but it’s tasty. As for me, I got the falafel salad. That falafel was dry and bland as the Sahara desert but the salad was fantastic and fresh. Loved the dressing. Although I noticed some of the lettuce was browning and wilted. Overall, not bad! I was also given a dirty sharing plate which isn’t a huge deal but attention to detail would be appreciated. Also they did not accept a birthday reward we tried to use as they made some switch. That’s a shame because my family is a big fan of this place. We will be back. I’m not impressed but I’m interested in ramen night. Maybe that will change my mind.
The burger with an egg as 10/10, I wake up craving burgers at 7 am and they open very early. Service was friendly and attentive despite how busy they were. I found seating at the bar. I truly haven’t one complaint.
This is in the Rochester public market. It’s my third annual trip to have the breakfast sandwich. It’s so good that I dream about it. The people on a Saturday are eclectic and fun. It’s packed. Window seat was great for people watching. Had a chai latte. Staff was super nice. If I lived in roc again I’d be here every day.
Breakfast was ok. And I say that because it wasn't great but I acknowledge the effort for trying to be unique. Our first time here. My friend ordered the breakfast sandwich. She wasn't a fan of the type of sausage (Italian I think). The biscuit was extremely dry! I think she kinda choked at one point. It was literally crumbling and falling apart when she picked it up. I got the biscuits and gravy. Again with the dry biscuits. And I wouldn't have been that bad if I just had more gravy. But they just put enough on to cover the surface. Absolutely NOT worth the price. Coffee was good though.
