Crema's Take
“Nestled in Carmel Valley, Café Rustica is a sun-drenched gem where leisurely lunches and celebration meals feel like a natural extension of the day, thanks to its inviting outdoor seating and genuinely warm staff. The kitchen turns out thoughtful, simply prepared dishes—think pan-fried sole with mashed potatoes and crusty bread dipped in olive oil—that pair beautifully with local wines, making it an ideal stop before a wine tasting or whenever you want to linger over a long, unhurried meal with loved ones.”

My husband brought me here for a birthday lunch, and it was gorgeous. Ensuring was pretty much perfect. We greatly enjoyed our food (lightly floured and pan fried sole with mashed red potatoes and a massive salad). The chive cream sauce is a sauce I intend to try to duplicate. We also had two glasses each of the French sparkling rose on the menu and apple galette for dessert. Phenomenal. Will certainly return! If it’s good weather (today was), then I highly recommend outdoor seating.
Went on a weekend to have lunch to celebrate my Mom’s birthday. My parents have been here multiple times & love it! Great atmosphere, great food, & friendly staff. We sat outside as it was a nice sunny day. I ordered the butternut squash ravioli, very flavorful & I enjoyed every bite. Well done chef! They even brought out a nice dessert for my Mom and sang Happy Birthday to her. Lovely staff & great food! My whole family was happy and enjoyed their meal. Thank you! :)
My wife and I enjoyed a relaxed lunch at Cafe Rustica, seated outside on a beautiful day. We shared a bottle of Justin Cabernet and started with a small loaf of bread served with olive oil and balsamic. For an appetizer, we ordered the Crispy Calamari with chili aioli. The calamari was tender—not chewy—and the chili aioli was an excellent dip. For our main, we shared a Margherita pizza with a thin crust, traditional sauce, fresh mozzarella, basil, and tomatoes. It was well executed and easy to share. For dessert, we split the Fresh Lemon Pudding Cake, which came with sliced strawberries, whipped cream, and a strawberry drizzle. It was very unique and delicious, and a standout way to end the meal. Service was excellent—Thomas took great care of us—and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. Cafe Rustica is a very quaint spot, nestled in Carmel Valley about 12 miles east of Highway 1, and well worth the drive. After lunch, my wife and I took a leisurely stroll through Carmel Valley, wondering why we hadn’t discovered this area sooner. Our walk formed a relaxed circuit along both sides of Carmel Valley Road, passing numerous wine-tasting rooms, restaurants, and beautiful scenery. We stopped often to take photos of the tasting locations, the mature oak trees, and even a majestic hawk perched on a fence. The overall setting and atmosphere were wonderful, and it’s easy to imagine returning specifically for wine tasting—or even staying at one of the nearby resorts. Carmel Valley left a strong impression and is well worth spending time exploring.
If you are in the Carmel Valley and want a delightful meal, Cafe Rustica is an amazing choice. We ate there for lunch before a local area wine tasting. The setting is quaint and lovely. The menu seems to be thoughfully crafted with delicious options like an egg salad sandwich and tomato basil soup. We sat outside in at a comfortable table with citrus trees around us. Our group of 5 throroughly loved our meal, the service and the experience.
During our first visit to Carmel Valley, we dined at Café Rustica and immediately understood why this charming, cozy spot is a local favorite. From the moment we walked in, the staff made us feel incredibly welcome. One of the unique highlights is the open kitchen—watching the chefs at work adds a memorable, personal touch to the experience. The food is exceptional. Portions are generous, and every dish we’ve tried has been rich in flavor and beautifully presented. My personal favorites are the lamb and duck—some of the best I’ve ever had. But what truly stands out is the service. We once introduced close family friends to Café Rustica, and they loved it so much they planned to celebrate their anniversary there. Wanting to surprise them, I called ahead to reserve a table and arrange a bottle of champagne. Despite the distance and short notice, the staff made it happen seamlessly, even processing the payment over the phone. That thoughtful gesture made their evening unforgettable—and cemented our loyalty to this gem. Now, every time we’re in the area, a dinner at Café Rustica is a must. It’s not just the food—it’s the care and hospitality that keep bringing us back.
