Sunrise Cafe

We were walking Yellow Springs and stopped in for lunch. It wasn't that busy for a Friday, so we were seated immediately. The restaurant isn't that big, with booth seating along one wall. The inside casts a hippy vibe with lots of color and artfully painted walls. We both ordered the Sunrise chicken salad melts with a cucumber salad. I must say, the sandwich was quite tasty with the butter toasted bread and the chicken salad seasoned well and the melted cheese oozing out of the sides. Our server was friendly and attended to all our needs. A great bite of food.

Atmosphere may not be for everyone, but we loved the rustic charm and artwork. A great variety of food, carefully prepared and amazingly delicious. Our salmon, buger, sides and pie were 5 star delicious 😋

I unfortunately had a disappointing experience here. When we arrived, the server immediately asked for our order. I requested an extra five minutes because my mom, who has some cognitive difficulties, needed some time to decide. After that, the server never returned unless we specifically asked for attention. We ended up waiting 15–20 minutes before I had to go to the counter and request someone to take our order. When the original server finally came back, she took our order in a way that felt rushed and indifferent, even snatching the menus from us. While the food itself was fine, her behavior felt disrespectful. To make matters worse, she brought us the check while we were still eating, without us asking, which felt like a hint that we should leave immediately. It would have been far more respectful to wait until we were finished or at least ask if we were ready for the bill. After reading other reviews, it seems rude behavior from servers may be common here. The server who attended us may have been named Shawnee, as mentioned on my bill, though I could be mistaken. Given this experience, I’ll not be returning.

Visiting from out of town and came across this gem, I recommend you call ahead to see if there is a wait. We had one couple ahead of us but got seated pretty quickly. The host is a vibe! Love them. After getting seated we were greeted quickly. The menu is big and I wanted to try it all. I ended up doing their pumpkin pancakes, potatoes, eggs, and sausage. My husband had Huevos rancheros and a pancake. Coffee was great, loved it all. The potatoes were a favorite! The pancakes had crispy edges and it was delicious. Definitely recommend checking this place out.

Amazing menu selection, remarkable coffee, and let me tell you about the pancakes. As if you need to know anything else, they're served with clarified butter; a clear sign from the kitchen staff that you're loved. The edges were crispy giving each bite a bit of a European pastry effect. Lastly, the bacon is not average. Thanks, Shawnee for your fast and friendly service with a smile!
