Chalos

Crema's Take
“Chalos is a warmly beloved counter-service spot where Spanish traditions meet San Francisco coffee culture, with a particularly devoted following for their house-made empanadas—especially the spicy beef and chicken varieties that keep regulars coming back. The streamlined ordering system (counter or kiosk) makes it equally suited for a quick caffeine fix or lingering over traditional drinks and light fare, and the genuine hospitality from staff adds to the homey, nostalgic feeling that has guests describing their experience as transportive. Fair warning: those empanadas are generously flavored but petite, and at around seven dollars, they're positioned more as a premium indulgence than a bargain bite.”

I freaking LOVE this place! I usually order for take out but I’ve also eaten there. The empanadas are so YUMMY, my favorite ones are spicy beef and spicy chicken. Service is lovely and so is the coffee!!!!
The empanada was tasty but it was almost $7… literally ate it in 3 bites. I am a small woman and don’t eat much but this was a shock. I won’t be going back for that reason.
Step in and order at the counter with a person or the kiosk for quick computer ordering and payment. Once you order and pay, they’ll call you up for your food if you order to go (not sure about table delivery if eating there). I got the churros with cinnamon, and if you want a good carb load then this is the perfect pick… not too sweet, crispy outside with soft interior. This place fills with sun if the sun is out, leading into noon, so it gets warm inside. There are also some small seats outside. Remember — no laptops, tablets etc. and no outside food or beverages. They have clear signs stating this.
I’ve wanted to try this place for a long time, and now that I have, sadly I won’t go again. The empanada was tiny, and the price was not in proportion. The flavor was lacking. I had the jamon and cheese. I have had way better empanadas than this. The person behind the counter was not welcoming. He didn’t let me know that my drink was ready. When I found out that he had placed my drink in a different area than I expected, there was no smile nor an explanation. He was not the person I would have chosen to greet a customer.
It can’t be understated, the food (and coffee) here are phenomenal. It’s like I was transported back to my childhood with my mother’s cooking. Nothing is dry, everything is delicious, and service is amazing. The owners and staff are very attentive, quick, and open to chatting. Can’t beat the service nor quality of food , especially for the affordable price. This is a must visit spot!!! Highly recommend the vanilla cold brew…I had two.
