Tatte Bakery & Cafe | Dupont Circle
1301 Connecticut Ave NW, Washington, DC
Crema's Take
“Tatte's Dupont Circle location excels at what matters most: genuinely excellent pastries and smooth, well-executed coffee that keeps people coming back multiple times over. The space gets crowded and can feel a bit chaotic, but if you snag a seat, you'll find it's worth navigating the kitchen aromas and shoulder-to-shoulder mornings for a buttery croissant and a cappuccino that actually tastes like it was made with care.”

First of all, the pastries here are really really good. They maybe would even command the price if the atmosphere wasn't awful. Unfortunately, the people who designed this space did not think about acoustics at all. Good luck hearing yourself think with the amount of noise created by the number of people they tried to cram into a small dining area made entirely out of glass and tile. What an awful experience when trying to catch up with a friend over coffee. I ordered a few pastries and a coffee. When I saw the person behind the counter starting to bag my pastries, I told her that they were "for here". She smiled and told me that unfortunately they had been told to not use too many dishes, so would it be okay if she bagged them anyway? I wasn't really sure how to respond to this, so I said that I guessed it was fine. What I maybe should have asked is if the restaurant really wanted their customers eating out of bags at the table. I think the answer would have probably been a "yes" based on the number of people I saw eating freshly prepared food out of paper to-go boxes at the dining tables. Somehow I got lucky and my cappuccino came in a ceramic cup! My friend sadly received her matcha latte in a paper to-go cup even though she reiterated two or three times that her drink was "for here".
Walking through DC, searching for the best Croissant and decided to give Tattte a try. The store was inviting and the counter was filled with delicious baked goods. I ordered a plain croissant and an almond croissant to compare with other pastries from around town and throughout my travels. The plain croissant was decent, it was light and flakey, but the flavor was average and didn't speak to me. However, the almond croissant was a different story. The texture was fantastic and the flavors were outstanding!. I could have eaten a couple more. If you are hungry for an almond croissant, this is one you should try!
WARNING ⚠️ If you’re sensitive to strong kitchen smells and prefer not to walk around scented like mobile oily bacon all day, you may want to grab breakfast elsewhere. We checked out their DC Center location yesterday and loved it, so of course we wanted to try another one. That first spot is three to four times larger, the design actually has room to breathe, and the vibe is calm enough to enjoy your snacks without your clothes absorbing the scent of oil and pure chaos. The DuPont spot is a different story. While the food quality is the same, the orange cake leans dry and the space feels cramped, chaotic, and overwhelmed by kitchen odors. The corporate prototype design they’re using might work in a roomy location, but it doesn’t translate well to a smaller footprint. If atmosphere matters to you, this is not the spot.
Great place for coffee and cake. It looked fairly busy but didn't take long to get served and receive my order. I had the cinnamon rose, which was really nice. Plenty of seating inside.
Great coffee spot—went back 4 times! I tried their cappuccino, iced americano and lemon tart—all so good. The coffee was smooth and strong (in the best way), and the food was fresh and tasty every time. It became my go-to while in DC!
