Cafe Cotton Bean
1077 Bergen St, Brooklyn, NY
Crema's Take
“Tucked into Brooklyn, Cafe Cotton Bean is a refreshingly unpretentious espresso bar that prioritizes thoughtful simplicity over trends, with a calm, welcoming atmosphere that encourages lingering conversations and genuine connection. The owners clearly care about the details that matter—from teaching curious customers Japanese words to implementing smart sustainability practices—creating a space where a quality coffee or light meal feels like a genuine ritual rather than a transaction. Fair warning: their pricing leans premium and they charge extra for iced drinks, but regulars seem to view it as the cost of finding a truly grounded, gimmick-free cafe in the city.”

I love the aesthetic of this place, the food, and the calm vibes. They taught me a bit of words in Japanese, which was fun! Whether you take a sandwich, soup, or ice cream, you will always feel welcomed. It is super peaceful (they chose a good spot in front of the tree)!
Once was an amazing cafe. With great coffee, food, and customer service. The coffee is still good but is severely overpriced. A large drip is about 6$ a cold brew is 8$ .. the drip I just ordered wasn’t hot and they weren’t happy about asking to have it served full.
This is the only coffee shop I’ve been to that charges an extra dollar for an iced version of the same drink. When I asked why they’re charging another dollar for ice the owner told me delis do the same thing. Okay. If you want your coffee shop to feel like a deli then go ahead. If you want people to feel scammed than sure, continue to up charge for alt milks and temperature while we’re at it too. As a former barista I know it takes less time and effort to make an iced drink. I know you’re doing it because iced drinks are popular. Not only does upcharging for temperature seem questionable and greedy, it leaves a bad impression, even if the rest of the menu is outstanding. Absorb that cost elsewhere, raise the jalepeno biscuit fifty cents if you have to. Selling premium food and beverages is one thing, but let’s not price-gouge for frozen water
Hey friends! This review is about sustainability. I so appreciate your signage in shop, that communicates to folks that they can order their drink for here, to prevent creating waste. I also appreciate the fact that you offer real spoons to mix milks into coffee, and provide a receptacle for used, reusable dishes. And that you have real glasses for coffee and for the water refill station. As a customer, it means a lot to me to be able to support local businesses that are doing more to promote reusable, circular coffee habits. By 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish, and over 95% of the plastic that we used does not actually get recycled. To customers, reading this, if you are dining in house, you have the option to create less trash! No need to have your coffee on their lovely porch without a reusable. Thanks to the clear signage and options provided by cotton bean! Much appreciated.
Cotton Bean is an excellent place in that is a simple coffeeshop, without gimmicks , without expanding their offerings beyond what is reasonable. Its a reasonable place. A logical place. A small simple operation pumping out delicious coffees in a very nice clean shop with friendly staff. It’s wonderful. Its precisely what a coffeeshop should be. I’ve encountered 3 coffeeshops like this one, the other two being Gotham and Olas where the coffee is spectacular, the service wonderful and the shop simple. Could offering no wifi be the secret to the enchantment of these places. Perhaps. Id like to think so. Sit down, read a book, have a conversation, pretend its the 90’s… which for many was peak civilization.
